cucumber haters

I quite like a cucumber in a salad, it's refreshing, adds a bit of crunch and feels summery.

My DH hates them - can taste them a mile off.

Any ideas for cooling salads that don't contain cucumbers?

Add it later to your own plate? I tend to serve things separately if someone doesn't like it. I don't like celery but DH does so the salad will be made and portioned and then he adds his celery.

Sliced red, yellow and orange pepper has that fresh, crunchy quality. Iceberg is good for crunch. If you want something with more flavour, just mix it with rocket or radiccio.

I love cucumber but DH doesn't; DS1 will only eat it without seeds and DS2 only without skin. I prep it three different ways and put it in a separate bowl. Can't have a summer day without it.

Nothing to add except your DH is completely right.

If you peel them, would he eat them?

Also, I always serve the salad bits in bowls separately at the table cos the children are fussy blighters. Just do that?

Does he like watermelon? It's very nice in salads.

I can taste if the knife that cut a tomato had also been used to cut cucumber. Hate it!
Also hate the concealed cucumber in otherwise innocuous looking sandwiches at someone else's house or at a buffet. Yuck.
However, I can see the point of a cucumber like element in a sandwich or salad. Red or yellow pepper or radish for the crunch, or fruit such as nectarine in a salad for the moistness and flavour work for me.

Yes, he can taste it even if a knife has been used to cut one up than used on something else.

It's just the two of us so I'm not really that fussed about making two lots of things so the alternatives are really helpful.

I can also taste things that have touched cucumber. I think the majority of people can’t actually taste them.
