Why do I want buttermilk?

Justajot · 24/07/2020 20:01

Our usual supermarket doesn't sell buttermilk. I wanted some a few weeks ago, but couldn't get any. I now have the opportunity to buy some, but I've forgotten what I wanted it for. Any ideas?

Soda bread, as a pp said. Either white or brown soda bread is the dogs blx with real butter while warm. YUM!

My granny (Irish) made a version of it with currants and raisins. Called Spotted Dick ha ha, gorgeous too. She made her day to day soda bread on a big flat pan over the fire. Honest.

Scones or Nigella has a chicken recipe where you mariinade the chicken in, I think buttermilk, soya sauce and garlic

pennysea · 24/07/2020 20:43

I do this all the time. I get in my head that I need a hard to find ingredient for a recipe and by the time I get round to buying it I forget what recipe it was for!

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 24/07/2020 20:43

Scones is the only reason i’ve ever looked for it.
English supermarkets never have it, and countless English recipes inexplicably call for it. One of the great mysteries of our time.

Making scones or possibly tenderising chicken.

Ina Garten's Lemon Cake?

HelloDulling · 24/07/2020 20:56

Either cake or chicken.

Justajot · 24/07/2020 21:25

Is Ina Garten's lemon cake good? I assume it's made with "good budder".

My Irish grandmother made lovely soda bread, very tempted to make a batch. She also, inexplicably, made brown soda bread with a mixture of white flour and bran.

Are scones better with buttermilk?

@Justajot, that’s how I make soda bread! Yes, scones are amazing with buttermilk!
