Would you use Trex that is over a year out of date?

Just about to do some dairy-free baking and I've found some Trex in the fridge which is BBE Feb 2019. It looks and smells OK, although I haven't tasted it (just cleaned my teeth!). Do you reckon it's OK to use (in buttercream icing, which won't be baked)?

I’m pretty lax with those kind of things but I wouldn’t.

Trex is just vegetable oil/fat and ‘off’ vegetable oil is rancid.

I would tbh, if it smells fine then it’s not gone rancid. Was it stored in a fridge?

I used some the other day that was past it's date, as I don't really have much truck with best before dates.

I didn't sniff first and it was off. It was horrid. We weren't ill but dinner was ruined.

My mum
And my Nan probably would but no, it's perishable. Wouldn't risk it.

StripeyLurcher · 13/05/2020 09:47

I wouldn't use it. It could be ok but not worth the risk as you could easily use a different recipe or wait till you can buy some fresh.

Sorry for the late update and thank you so much for your replies! I’ve used it. I googled the ingredients, smelled it extreeeeemely closely and then tasted a bit. Plus it’s been in the fridge sealed since purchased. And I googled it and found out from some American website that in reality it keeps for years.

Another factor is that we are in the Middle East and it’s not easy to find here. I went to our big Waitrose earlier to see if I could buy some new stuff, but they didn’t have any, so I decided to use what I had.

I’ve thankfully managed to make a massive vat of very yummy dairy-free chocolate buttercream, and given how much of the bowl I licked about two hours ago, I think we will all survive eating it.

If I don’t reply again tomorrow, unfortunately we did not survive. (Joke. Sort of).
