What vinegar are you supposed to use please? I remember having when I was a kid and loved it. Seem to remember it being the ordinary malt vinegar was used to pickle but recipes I've seen say white vinegar....

Whichever you prefer. Malt vinegar has flavour, white vinegar is pure vinegar that you can add different spice to.

You can jazz up your malt vinegar too of course. Throw in some peppercorns, mustard seeds or dill or something would be nice.
I wouldn't recommend fruit vinegars for cucumbers.

I use white wine vinegar to make a dill and cucumber pickle.

I use rice or white wine vinegar into which I dissolve some caster sugar for pickled cucumber. I seem to remember my grandmother used malt vinegar, but I think that would be a bit harsh now.

If I’m planning to serve with Asian style food, I usually mix equal parts rice vinegar, light soy sauce, sugar and sesame oil.

If I'm doing it to serve with a roast beef dinner I just do slices of cucumber and onion in malt vinegar, but that's eaten straight away and not pickling to keep.
