Crumpets!

So I made crumpets

They tasted amazing - but they looked a little challenged!

So I don't have crumpet rings and I only have 3 metal cookie cutters and one is tiny!!

What else could I use & how do I get bubbles on the top/bottom (whichever)

I think you can use tins, e.g. baked bean tins, or tins that contained soup or tomatoes. Obviously cleaned out and paper wrapping removed first.

The crumpets should form from the bicarb I think? It is a while since I've done them and I had a special pan with four rings in it but I can't find it anymore!

ooo tins!! good idea

Temp lower, cook till set on the top (takes quite some time) and open up holes with a cocktail stick. Turn over for only a few seconds to cook the top.

As has been said, bean tins works, oil them well.

Crumpets were featured on 'Food unwrapped' on channel 4 last night. I was only half listening, but if you take a look, I'm sure you will learn something that will be helpful!

Do them without rings aka pikelets ( not Australian pikelets , they are more of a drop scone)

I make gluten free crumpets and just use a small frying pan and then cut into wedges once it's cooked

That's what we did in the end

I think I am going to measure everything out tonight and get up early to mix nip back to bed for a bit then cook them :)

@JulietTango do you have a recipe for the GF crumpets? Would love to try that.

Yes of course hope it works as well for you as for me

180g gluten free self raising flour
1tsp salt
2tsp sugar
1tsp dried yeast
150ml water
150ml milk

In one bowl mix dry ingredients

In another bowl mix water and milk - microwave until warm.

Whisk wet ingredients into dry ingredients until lump free. I use a hand whisk to do this

Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes

Lightly oil a cold frying pan and pour in the crumpet mix - i used a 24cm pan as this have a nice thickness of crumpet

Place over a low heat and cook for 7 - 8 minutes until golden brown on bottom and set on top. The time is a rough guide it may take longer or be done quicker

Flip and cook another 3 - 4 minutes

For best results cool cut into wedges and toast
