Glut of pears-any suggestions?

My neighbours have a glut of pears & have given me two huge bags full.I don't want to make jam with them,as I'm saving my jamjars for blackberry jam making.

Has anyone any suggestions of what else I can do with them?

Thanks.

They are nice in crumble.

And my Russian friend preserves them in syrup, but you'd need jars for that too.

Cider!!!

I also plan to make blackberry jam, but doubt I will get round to it

How is your dd1 getting on at Big School?

He is loving it, and marched off without even giving me a kiss this morning - I had to call him back

It will pass, I bet she will skip in tomorrow as normal.

Second (or third) pear crumble, or pear and apple. Pear upside-down-cake is nice, too. I have a recipe somewhere for caramel pear puddiing, which is an upside-downy sort of thing with added golden syrup.

lots of recipes for apple cakes etc that pears would work well in

personally I would just stew them, freeze in batches and thaw to eat with yoghurt / muesli / alone at a later date.
ot just peel, core, chop and freeze them for using when you're more inspired.

FuriousGeorge · 10/09/2007 22:13

Mmmm, these all sound good.I'll see if I can scrounge some more jars,so I'd love the pickled pears & chutney recipes. How do you make liquer aDad?

Can I have the stilton & pear tart & caramel pears recipes?
Thanks for the salsa recipe Littlelapin, will try that out too.
I have made a plum & pear crumble & will freeze some too (the plums were last years out of the freezer).

Thanks, all these suggestions are fab.I'm going to work my way through them.

Ok, pickled pears - have never actually this myself but my aunt makes it nearly every year.

7lbs hard pears
3.5 lbs lump sugar (wtf is that?)
1 large lemon
0.5 pints of white vinegar
0.5 oz root ginger, crushed
a few cloves

Peel and half or quarter the pears (depending on size). Meanwhile boil the other ingredients together for 3 minutes. Add the pears, cover and boil until tender. Put into sterilised jars and cover.
