Who remembers Beanfeast? Does anyone still make it?

We’re going on holiday to Sweden with a big group of friends.
We arrive on a Sunday afternoon and we’re cooking on the first evening.
I was going to make a chilli, but I need to cater for vegetarians and I don’t know what type of veggie mince i’ll be able to get out there so was hoping to take something to be in the safe side.
I remember years ago that you could buy a packet veggie mince called Beanfeast, but can’t find anything like it now,
Does anyone know if there’s anything similar available?

I buy beanfeast in bulk whenever I go to Asda. It's still just as delicious if you ask me! I would eat it every single day if I lived alone, I love it. My mouth is watering now. Grin

Kittywampus · 22/01/2020 20:13

@jmh740 You can still buy tartex online www.amazon.co.uk/tartex/sk=tartex?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Kittywampus · 22/01/2020 20:14

Sorry, link doesn't seem to have worked. It's available on amazon.

FREEM · 22/01/2020 20:25

what about the grandosa( I think that's the brand)
falafel and veggie burger mixes

MiniGuinness · 24/01/2020 02:23

If I was going to Sweden and someone cooked me beanfeast I would cry. Swedish supermarkets have lovely lovely stuff. Do you hate your friends? Or just vegetarians in general?

Avelinebread · 24/01/2020 02:57

Beanfeast used to give me the most glorious farts. Really, really gassy and deadly Grin

PurpleDaisies · 24/01/2020 03:05

Apparently ten percent of Swedes are vegan or vegetarian so there should be some good stuff in the supermarkets.

polkadotpixie · 24/01/2020 03:14

You can still buy Beanfeast in Tesco, it's with the pot noodles etc

My DH loves it, I'm afraid I think it's rank 🤮

Wombatstew · 24/01/2020 03:36

I reckon I would try a packet before you go and maybe use it as a base & jazz it up with some additional fresh ingredients. I remember I really used to love it, not sure I would like it now though.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/01/2020 09:36

Thanks all.

Think I’ll pack a variety of canned beans for the veggie chilli to be on the safe side!

The other pita is that the government alcohol shops don’t open on Sundays. Shock. We’ll have to rely on duty free booze until Monday!

I have just done a veggie shop at asda today as we are trialing meat free. I HUNTED for Beanfeast! Eventually found it but only the spag bol variety. I really hope its as good as it was in the 90's, I used to add a tin of tomatoes and some spices and it was so good! The chilli was the best though, used to add a tin of beans to that as well, made you fart so bad!

SapatSea · 24/01/2020 18:06

Me too Aveline and Bobster very farty!!! full of msg to make it tasty.

Deathraystare · 20/02/2020 15:34

I remember Sosmix (sob!) . It was a very sad day for me when it disappeared..

Deathraystare · 20/02/2020 15:35

A few years back I tried some soya chunks from an asian store. UGH. Very chewy and weird. Did not finish the bag!

MockneyReject · 20/02/2020 19:58

I have sosmix in my cupboard, right now! As well as (green) Tartex and Marigold yeast flakes!
Even I wouldn't fancy Beanfeast, though!

Benelli750 · 23/03/2020 03:27

Me two remember beanfeast I'm looking to reunited after 20yrs I have to say I found it ok, have to admit after a beer lol and it I remember it was low on salt and fat it was the first thing I though of when I was looking for low cholesterol alternatives to meat there is lots of other things out there but if I can find it I'm going to try it again you guys have given me some places to look thanks 🙂

cms1972 · 27/10/2020 06:14

Sosmix has not disappeared! You can order it from "Alternative Stores" online. You have to buy a big bag, but it's the same stuff that was on sale in the late '80s Smile
Beanfeast on the other hand, has disappeared.

The decision by Batchelors to pull Beanfeast off the shelves permanently has blasted a hole in my culinary repertoire. It's fabulous stuff! I mix it with other things; sweet chilli sauce & kidney beans to stuff in tortillas & cover with cheese sauce for example. It was also fantastic to take camping - just add a pint of water and a saucepan & voila! Dinner.
I made a mean lasagne with it too..... and kids love it.
Since at the moment there is a definite trend for eating less meat, and Beanfeast not only tastes marvellous (IMO) but it is cheap, versatile and convenient, this really is an idiotic decision by Batchelors.
So I contacted them and got the usual guff back, "We recognise that this will disappoint our customers... we hope you will find something you like just as much from our range... blah blah".
Unfortunately there is nothing else like it in their range - or in any other range, as anyone who has gagged on Quorn or fallen asleep over a tedious plate of soya chunks will tell you.

If there is anyone out there who would like Beanfeast to return to our supermarket shelves, can they please post a message?

It would be nice if Batchelors stopped putting profits before people and brought it back!

TroysMammy · 27/10/2020 06:19

It gave me the most uncontrollable farts when I tried it years ago. It's made by Batchelors.

john9159 · 01/01/2021 18:36

For those of you who hated Beanfeast, you will be pleased to learn it has permanently been discontinued by Batchelors.
For those of us who liked this it is a tragedy as so many professionals say we should become vegetarians.
There was something about the taste which simply cannot be recreated with separate ingredients.

cms1972 · 01/01/2021 19:47

No, there is nothing else like it. Beanfeast was a one-off.
I miss it like a death in the family.
Hopefully the fools at Batchelors will see reason and bring it back at some point.

GreenSlide · 31/03/2021 17:57

I'm thinking of starting a petition to send to Batchelors to get Beanfeast back. I miss it so much.

cms1972 · 01/04/2021 13:03

I am so with you on this.
Why on earth did they stop making it?
It can only be for financial reasons - no concern for their customers at all!
I had so many recipes I made using Beanfeast - its disappearance has blasted a hole in my culinary week. It wouldn't be so bad if there was anything remotely comparable on the market, but there isn't.
YES do please get in touch with them; I did ages ago, and got the usual rubbish back about hoping I would find something else I liked in their range Hmm ... like I'm going to spend the rest of life necking pot noodles! Angry
Here's my guilty secret. I had such a craving for shepherds pie (that I used to make with Beanfeast, obvs), that I actually bought beef mince & made it with that, and then I ate it. Not that eating meat is bad if that's what you want to do, but I hadn't eaten meat for years. So I felt guilty afterwards, and Batchelors I HOLD YOU COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE !!

Nicpl · 26/07/2021 17:10

I miss bean feast so much along with my mum we used to eat it atleast twice a week, was so dissapointed to find they had discontinued it. Maybe if more shops stocked it they would of sold more, the only store that sold it in my area was tesco. Havnt found anything even similar to it since it dissapeared. Very sad 😢

Bryonyshcmyony · 26/07/2021 17:14

Sachets of green lentils!
