Steak and kidney stew is lovely in the slow cooker. I just add onions, potatoes, carrots and whatever other veg I have available plus some stock, bayleaves and Worcestershire Sauce and leave for a few hours.

I don't know whether they're healthy or not but i like them. If you were concerned you could make it just with steak.

Tonight we're having Delia's Goulash but cooked in slow cooker

Ingredients
1 large onion
1 large green pepper
1 clove of garlic, crushed
1lb 12oz or 1 x 800g pack diced braising steak
1 level tablespoon plain flour
1 heaped tablespoon paprika plus extra, for sprinkling
1 x 560 g jar Heinz Tomato Frito or passata
5 fl oz (150 ml) red wine
5 fl oz (150ml) soured cream
salt and freshly milled black pepper

What you need to do is chop the onion roughly into largish chunks, and the same with the pepper, then place them in a bowl with the crushed garlic. Then add the meat cubes, the flour and paprika and a good seasoning of salt and pepper.

Now mix everything together with your hands to get a good coating of flour and paprika, then tip the whole lot into a 4 pint (2.25 litre) casserole. Mix the Tomato Frito with the wine, then pour that over the rest of the ingredients and give a good stir.

Put it all inslow cooker. To serve, add the soured cream ? but don?t mix it in, what you need is a sort of marbling effect.

Then sprinkle with a little more paprika and serve with brown rice and braised red cabbage.

You can buy vegetable suet in a lot of places. Tescos sell an Atora one but there are different brands about.

When I was without a kitchen I bought one of those George Foreman grills and you can do some nice things like chicken breasts in that - cost me £15 if I remember rightly. If you fancy a change from casseroles that is.

i'd love to get a slow-cooker -- can anyone recommend a particular one?

Scootergrrrl · 31/08/2007 20:26

Steak bake is yummy - layer onions mixed with garlic, sliced tomatoes, braising steak and potaoes twice then cook in slow cooker for as long as it takes! You don't need any more liquid cos of the tomatoes.
PS: My Morphy Richards slow cooker is ace!!
