Croquembouche

We’re having a Christmas catch up soon and I’d like to make a festive croquembouche. The last time I made one I didn’t use anything for stability beyond half a pan of caramel and it was a bit squint.

I really don’t want to buy a croquembouche cone if I can help it, both because I’m tight and lacking on storage. Has anyone any ideas on something that might be an adequate substitute?

Google suggests A1 cardboard in a cone shape which feels like asking for trouble. Knowing me it will ping open and fling choux buns across the room Grin

Im sure I've seen cone shaped styrofoam for crafting at places like Hobbycraft.

Cardboard cone, staple and/or stick shut and then line with greaseproof paper maybe?
