I ordered 10 chickens online with Ocado to save a delivery spot. Thought I'd cancelled them but they arrived at 7am this morning! I tried to refuse delivery but that said I had to accept it as they are perishable.

I am an idiot.

So I have 3 in the freezer. I'm giving 2 to a friend. Leaving 5 to use. I have food sorted for most of this week already so I'm hoping I could maybe roast them and use the roast chicken meat to make recipes for the freezer.

Can anyone suggest some quick easy and ideally healthy things to do with an absolute mountain of roast chicken?

Or, would o be best to just roast it and then freeze the cooked meat in batches to use in things like fajitas and pies from frozen?

I'm such a fool and I'd love to make this a less expensive mistake by doing something with the chicken.....

I use a bottle of very expensive champagne for this. It's only ever actually arrived once Blush they let us send it back. Enjoy your chicken tonight!

I'd think along the lines of batch prepping for the freezer. Joint, and make into ready to cook meals to freeze: add chopped onion and curry sauce to cut up thigh meat ; breast strips with onion and pepper strips plus fajita spice (serve with wraps) ; chunks of breast with polish sausage chunks and paprika etc - cook up with tin tomato and rice.

I love the hairy Dieters Chicken Tangle pie which uses a whole chicken. You could probably make the filling and then freeze it, make the pie up and cook it when you wasnt to.

I reserve my ocado slot with a bottle of gin!! Only one item to remember to delete, and if I forget then...GinHalloween Grin

I'd joint up the chickens and freeze the drums and thighs whole, then roast the breasts and shred for the freezer.

RedSoloCup · 11/11/2019 23:08

I save my slots with champagne 🍾🥂

BlouseAndSkirt · 12/11/2019 07:31

Buy some Chicken Tonight sauce today. And tomorrow. And the next day .......

winetomorrow · 12/11/2019 08:14

Whole chicken cooked in the slow cooker is awesome (little bit of water/herbs/honey soy). You might be able to squeeze in two at a time? Then shred and freeze in portions, and you'll have heaps of chicken stock too :)

FinallyHere · 12/11/2019 12:58

Bottle of brandy.

One way or another, I've never had to send it back 😀

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 12/11/2019 13:23

I'm assuming we're talking about dead chickens....

wowfudge · 12/11/2019 19:35

To the pp who suggested reserving a delivery slot with cleaning products and tins, ahem, the whole point is you don't have time to complete your shopping order so put a couple of things in which take you over the minimum order amount then go back to it.

YouTube is great for videos of jointing a chicken and Delia has advice on how to do this too.

MaybeDoctor · 14/11/2019 12:36

How long does it take to select your regular box of laundry detergent from favourites and multiply it by 6?

The OP would have ended up with a lot of detergent, but at least it keeps!

gamerchick · 14/11/2019 12:38

Cook, portion into freezer bags then freeze. Handy for grab meat for dishes.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/11/2019 22:33

Could we help you name them?

rosebb1 · 15/11/2019 23:10

This made me LOL so much!! ....in the nicest possible way Grin

Nacreous · 15/11/2019 23:13

I just duplicate a previous order (on my delivery website there's a button for it) do then at worst I get some stuff I wanted before.

bumblingbovine49 · 15/11/2019 23:24

On tesco you can reserve a slot with one item . I was impressed that once when I forgot I had down this, they called me to check if I really wanted one apple deliversed the next day Blush.

NachoFries · 23/11/2019 07:55

@bumblingbovine49 I wonder what they would have said if you said yes Halloween Grin

sashh · 23/11/2019 08:07

You could give some away onn Olio.

Put one in the slow cooker, one on a bbq (with a lid) and two in the oven, invite all youyr friends and neighbours round for a chicken party.

BrutusMcDogface · 23/11/2019 08:17

There’s no room in my freezer, so I would probably just offer them to friends on a Facebook status! Then I would (hopefully!!) never make the same mistake again!

If I did have room, I’d roast and store the meat in the freezer as suggested above for really quick meals.

BrutusMcDogface · 23/11/2019 08:18

Bumbling- I thought you had to check out of tesco to reserve the slot? And isn’t there a minimum amount for delivery?

bumblingbovine49 · 23/11/2019 11:18

@BrutusMcDogface.

Yes you do have to check out but as far as I know there is no minimum charge. I have always just paid for a very small item to hold the the slot, then added things later in the week

We use delivery saver though which works.out at between £1.50 and £1.80 a delivery for us.

If our order turned out to be less than £40 ( which it never has been in 10+ years) they
they do charge you a full delivery fee.

So to the poster who asked about the apple, if I had said yes they would have delivered it but charged the normal delivery fee which is a very expensive apple !!!

kateandme · 25/11/2019 03:33

oh this is my worst fear! i did this once but only a red pepper came haha.this was in the days you could put one item in to save it.
i often put old trolley in and get so scared ill forget to change it or will go to amend it and something wont be available and it will go from my basket....just me. Blush
chicken pies take up lts of meat.
big chicken casserole.
definitely see if you can joint and freeze the raw portions this will make storing and then using as you need it so much easier.i wonder whther you local butchers might help?
look on you tube for videos i dont think it is too hard.or at least spatchcock(flattening) which will make it easier to store.

kateandme · 25/11/2019 03:37

BrutusMcDogface i think its 25 min and anything under 40 they charge 4.and yes they only reserve for 2 hours.

kateandme · 25/11/2019 03:40

Nacreous yes i do that too. i love the add items to basket function.

nachthexe · 25/11/2019 03:45

I once had my entire Christmas shop delivered twice in the same day, one from ocado and one from Sainsbo’s. I apparently had totally forgotten that I had been Uber-organized when the Christmas week dates were released by one store, had a baby (who spent six weeks in scbu and multiple spots every week on discharge) and then grabbed a last minute appointment thinking how lucky I was and did my Christmas shop. Again.
MIL was in the house on her own when the second one arrived, mid-afternoon. We had only just finished stashing the original one and I had run out to collect the kids.
I was mortified. Fortunately MIL has a sense of humour and once she realised what I’d done (originally she thought the store had messed up) she was a star helping me freeze and stash, and deliver spares round the estate.
An entire Christmas shop. Blush
10 chickens? Pah! ‘It’s nothing Grin
