UnChristmassy Christmas cake?

TyneTeas · 30/10/2019 01:42

Awkward request...

We don't really like fruit cake.

Most of us don't like marzipan or icing or both

Annoyingly most of us don't like pannetonne either

We don't usually have any kind of Christmas cake for all of the above.

But I want to do something this year as it is an end of an era year : /

So firstly very grateful for any suggestions that may be a non-fruitcake or pannetonne cake

Or, would this but with dried Apple and mixed peal work as a base cake (no marzipan or icing obvs...)

Nigella clementine cake?

TyneTeas · 30/10/2019 02:02

That sounds lovely www.nigella.com/recipes/clementine-cake but we don't like almonds either, sorry don't know why I didn't list nuts in OP ( not intending dramatic dripfeed either)

Yule log.
Chestnut cake.
Roscon De Reyes, you can use candied fruits like pineapple for the top or make a chocolate version.

A chocolate cake with cherries?

SunshineAngel · 30/10/2019 11:24

We always make a huge yule log, icing sugar on top to look like snow, and little Christmassy characters stuck on it. It's really nice!

Notasyoungasiwas · 30/10/2019 11:26

This is yum! I usually make it for birthdays

What about this one from Nigella? Looks impressive but just an inoffensive vanilla flavour.

@FawnDrench thank you so much for posting that recipe. It looks amazing and I'm going to make it this year. I hate dried fruit so always felt a bit left out but I love spices and ginger and love a bit of icing so this is perfect!

TyneTeas · 24/12/2019 15:41

I went with @FawnDrench 's alternative Christmas cake

life.spectator.co.uk/articles/christmas-cake-people-hate-christmas-cake/

It smells amazing and has been drizzled with glance icing made with ginger wine.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and Happy Christmas Cake Xmas Smile
