Does anyone know if I can put smarties in the cake mix for cupcakes? Like we would with choc chips?

I think you could but the moisture of the cake mix might make the colours run a bit.

I think the colours would bleed out during cooking. Worth a try though

I don't see why not? Think I did it when I was younger

I think the crunchy outside shell would be a problem: the chocolate inside wouldn't melt, and the colour would run and make it all blotchy.

Mix a bit of the flour with them and add them right at the end. That will help prevent them sinking in the mix as it bakes.

I think you’d be best off smashing them up a bit first

wowfudge · 02/10/2019 11:28

You could also try roughly smashing them with a rolling pin first.

Yeah they look a bit messy but it does work. I’m making a smartie piñata cake - would that work with cupcakes? Just cut a hole in the middle after baking, put some smarties inside and then pop the lid back on!

Not sure the texture would work- lovely soft sponge with hard crunchy bits. I’d probably use them as decoration on top. Actually that’s not true. I’d make the cakes and eat the smarties while I did it

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll try it, but smash them up abit first. Fingers crossed Grin

OP- have spent all afternoon wondering about your cupcakes! How did they turn out??

nonamemummy · 02/10/2019 19:39

I didn’t risk it, so I just put them on top in the end. Didn’t want to risk the choc melting and have just plain smarties shells, or them burning or whatever would’ve happened! They were still yummy Grin

Far too late to be of help but my DD just got a recipe to make at school last week where you put a rollo in each cup cake. That worked really well, cakes were delicious.

Too late for you now, but for next time, definitely put them in the cake mix. Just saw these M&M ones while searching for another recipe.
