Minestrone - Parmesan?

I had some minestrone for lunch, and I thought that putting Parmesan on top was a thing, so I put Parmesan on top. Now I’m in all sorts of bother with cheese stuck to my teeth. Did I imagine this? Do people put cheese on their soup?

Come to think of it, I get cheese on my bean soup at the local Mexican restaurant, and there's no problem with that. Did I grate it wrong?

Don't use the sort of grater you'd use for cheddar, Parmesan should be very finely grated.
