With back to school in mind(but obvs work ones included)I wondered anyone fancies sharing ideas on what goes into your dc lunchboxes to try and inspire variety and stop them complaining of repeat lunch boredom
I was thinking along the lines of what went in/is going in the box, incl recipes sharing and recommendations of pre prep stuff
Share photos of said lunches if you fancy

Frittata, homemade pizza, mini mezze (olives, hummus, pita strips, dolmas) These are things I would have given my kids for the first few weeks of school before the inevitable panic stop at Tesco on the way to school for a shit meal deal. I am glad the packed lunch days are behind me, but I enjoy these threads (ideas for myself)

Stilllivinginazoo · 07/09/2019 02:57

Oh mezze hadn't thought of that Lorelei rock

I have one dairy free and another is vegetarian

Cant wait for inspiration I could definitely do with cooking some savoury muffin type things . I'm going to get flask so he can take warm food aswell fir when its colder. My little boy doesn't eat lots at school so tends to have either a wrap Or breadsticks with cream cheese or cheese and crackers or sometimes a pizza roll then probably 2 of these mini sweetcorm/carrot/spinach/green beans/ broccoli then fruit usually grapes/ blueberries or strawberries then either a yoghurt/ or something we have baked cake/ flspjack/gingerbread man. I have given pasta and frittata but he doesn't really enjoy cold so hoping can give more things when I get flask.

Aww, I thought this was going to be about work lunches for adults. :( I love a good lunchbox search though, if you don’t mind me staying. Grin I’ve been searching for the perfect lunchbox for years.

My son has a sandwich, some cheese, a brunch bar and either Salad or fruit bits. He likes tomatoes, grapes, cucumber, strawberries, pepper, stuff like that. But he wont eat crisps, crackers, breadsticks, sausage rolls, I need some ideas as he sometimes at afterschool club and they dont give them any food.

Namechange3007 · 07/09/2019 13:51

Doesnt eat eggs or bananas. Would eat yoghurt but doesnt that go warm?

SleepWarrior · 07/09/2019 14:04

I tend to just cycle through different bread and roll types to keep boredom at bay. Favourite filling is: cheese, wafer thin roast chicken, mayo, sliced green olives.

Unfortunately one classroom is nut and dairy free which makes really hard to think of stuff!

SleepWarrior · 07/09/2019 14:07

Re yoghurt - could you do frube type yogurts and put them in frozen so they defrost but are still cool when eaten. Actually a normal yoghurt may survive the freezer too. Also acts as an ice pack for the lunch bag!

Namechange3007 · 07/09/2019 14:37

Good idea thank you. He loves Frubes. Just need some savoury ideas too!

Stilllivinginazoo · 08/09/2019 04:56

name change cheese straws or scones?
Savoury muffins?
Sleep warrior do you bake?one of mine is dairy free and another acute peanut allergy.we sub vitality when baking for butter and soy/rice milk for regular(you can buy mini cartons of soy in three packs down long life food aisle to avoid waste if no one will drink it)sunflower seed butter is nice, but more expensive than peanut butter if you are in need of ringing the changes
If you don't bake cheap biscuits tend not to have milk as listed ingredient co op angel cake and Aldi do a small log cake in ginger, lemon or banana with no milk products in

I just found this salad on another thread and it looks perfect for lunches allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/39201/balela-salad.aspx.

If you want the nutritional info, the American version of the site has it www.allrecipes.com/recipe/218648/balela-salad/.

PinkFlowerFairy · 08/09/2019 07:07

Sandwhich, piece of fruit, tomatoes/veg sticks and either ceisps or sweet treat is probably 90% of lunch boxes at my kids school. After a few years of creative lunches we've pretty much joined this group!

Speaking of hearty salads, Budget Bytes published a blog post on 19 refrigerator salads that’ll last about 3 days in your fridge: www.budgetbytes.com/refrigerator-salads-for-eating-healthy/.

Last week I made the first one on the list, the Lemony Artichoke and Quinoa Salad, and OH loved it even though he’s not usually keen on quinoa. www.budgetbytes.com/lemony-artichoke-and-quinoa-salad/

I omitted the chickpeas because he doesn’t like them outside of hummus but I also added feta cheese to it for the protein and tanginess. It held up beautifully for days and was even better on day 3. I ate my portions with a chicken thigh.

Stilllivinginazoo · 09/09/2019 04:21

jingsmahbucketsome great ideas there,thank you

Dd2 (vegetarian teenager)made are some swede and butterbean falafel for her dinner,so remnants are going into today's lunchbox along with a large chopped salad, strawberries and black grapes and some Greek yogurt.

@Stilllivinginazoo you’re very welcome. I forgot that I also added red bell pepper and lacinato (dinosaur) kale to that artichoke salad to up the vegetable quotient. OH is also a kale hater but definitely loved that salad. I think I'll make it again this week to use up some veg like cucumber. It’s an extremely flexible recipe.

Stilllivinginazoo · 10/09/2019 08:59
