Ready roll icing help please

I'm hatching a plan to make a 2 tier cake for dd's birthday, cover both cakes in icing and then put some bought sugar paste figures on the top. I can sort of bake but never done icing before and wanted to buy ready rolled sheets. These seem pretty few and far between in anything except white. How easy is ready to roll icing? Will it work on round cakes? Any tips for avoiding disaster?

I buy the Renshaw brand of icing in ready rolled format online from here www.thecakedecoratingcompany.co.uk/cake-decorating-supplies-c20/sugarpaste-icing-c43 and find YouTube really helpful for learning new techniques
