Branston Pickle Smoothe (In a jar) !?

Hi all,

One of my guilty treats, crusty baton loaf, greater mature cheddar and Branston Pickle.

I've somehow bought this new 'smoothe' version without realising.

It completely ruined the sandwich.

Even smoothe peanut butter still has a texture that you would recognise.

I believe they made this 'smoothe' version in a squeeze bottle (where it belongs) as it is a squeeze sauce. I know they do Mayo in jars and squeeze bottles but that makes sense as the product is the same.

Back to the product well it felt like the same as the 'original' but with all the crunchy bits of onion removed, not even blended up a bit to still have a bit of crunch. Can't see the point, like they've taken the best bit of the product away, now resembles brown sauce.

Anyone else try this product, I'm thinking of complaining to the watchdog if anyone has experience with that. I think that tried and tested products like that you just pick them off the shelf and put them in the trolley not expecting them to be radically changed.

There is a blue label on the jar saying 'smoothe' but I didn't see it when I bought the product.

Been doing really well on a diet the last 2 months, cut out cheese and other things, decided to let my hair down this Friday evening and bought some extra mature and a crusty baton, had the Branston already in the fridge - what a let down that was, that Branston smoothe ruined the sandwich.

Going to chop and part boil some onions and add them to the jar so at least it's not a complete waste of money.

Anyone tried this 'smoothe' pickle (contradiction no?) or pick it up by accident like me.

Thanks

Alison

Just go and buy a jar of the original.
Watchdog? Really?
It says smooth on the label.

@finfintytint Fair point, should look closer but seems there's always stickers on products for competitions etc.. So tend to just throw things in the basket if the product looks the same.

The Friday shop is a bit of a trolley dash tbh.

If not Watchdog then who should I complain to, If I was a glass half full kinda person I could say that I have had all these great Branston pickle butties over the years and I just didn't jive with their new attempt at expanding there range.

Truth be told I'm a glass half empty kind of person at the moment and wasn't best pleased to find this 'smoothe' jar of gooey nonesense in my fridge when It was time for a lovely grated cheese and pickle sandwich.

So it’s smooth in that it doesn’t have any chunks at all? Like they’ve put it through a blender.
Sounds grim. Bin it, buy the proper stuff and get on with your life.

Teacakeandalatte · 10/08/2019 08:06

😂😂😂😂 complaining to the watchdog. Honestly maybe you should as they would probably enjoy your letter.

Alarmclockstop · 10/08/2019 08:08

I think your post is a bit crazy but agree that the Branston smooth is horrid. Also bought by mistake would never buy again. But I do like the smaller chunks Branston, think they call it Branston sandwich pickle

Finfintytint · 10/08/2019 08:08

You can email Branston on their contact page (owned by Mizkan Group) with your concerns.

You should definitely complain to the Office For Standards Of Pickle (OFPIC). Especially if they’re labelling it ‘smoothe’

sassafras123 · 10/08/2019 15:08

It's yuck just not the same without the crunchy bits

FawnDrench · 12/08/2019 18:22

My goodness - Picklegate!

I would write to my MP at the very least, then contact OfPickle and get them involved, and write to the press and ask them to launch "Picklewatch" to stop this heinous abomination from continuing.
