Vegetarian friend over for dinner at the weekend

I have friends over for dinner on Saturday. One of them is vegetarian and I am not sure what to make.

If the weather is good we will put the bbq on but no guarantees there.

When we go out for dinner she often orders a number of sides rather than a main.

Based on things she orders at restaurants or had at home, I think she likes:

Salad (with lots of balsamic vinegar)
Corn on the cob 🌽
Green veggies like broccoli 🥦
Hummus
Crudités like carrot and pepper sticks
Olives

I don’t think she likes pizza.

So currently all I can think of is to do a selection of things like crudités, olives, corn and salad for her but I feel there is no main event. This is how she seems to eat in a restaurant though. For us who eat meat I was thinking of doing chicken satay and maybe burgers and sausages if we put the bbq on.

Any suggestions welcome 🙂

Ah I've just read from start to finish and am interested to know how it went? Your menu sounds. I have a veggie husband. Would love to see your noodle salad recipe

My main comments are I've never known a veggie to eat fish sauce, and most haribo have gelatine in (which ask the veggies I know avoid!)

So lovely to see the effort you put in for your friend. Hope it went as well as you deserved

Stupid typos/missing words 👀

ReeReeR · 10/08/2019 22:54

@Myshitisreal My vegetarian friend loves Haribo and I think the friend who only eats halal meat ate them too. I bought Haribo specifically as I know my friend likes them but also had cake, biscuits and chocolate too, just so we had a choice of something sweet.

I think it went well actually. It was a nice evening.

This is the JO recipe for the chicken satay skewers and the noodle salad. I don’t always do the toasted cashews. The satay is really good and easy to make and the noodles are very tasty too.

My daughter is a veggie and eats SOME Haribo: these are the ones she knows are veggie

Funny-Mix
Giant Strawbs (her favourite)
Jelly Beans
Rainbow Twists
Sour Rainbow Twists
Sour Rainbow Spaghetti
Sour Rainbow Strips

Unfortunately none of these are vegan as all of them contain beeswax, which is used as a glazing agent.

ReeReeR · 11/08/2019 10:27

Thanks @BeyondMyWits but my friend eats all the Haribo

I think you can get gelatine free / vegan ones in the world food section in the supermarket

My DD doesn’t eat Haribo, but there are similar sweets that are vegetarian
You can get Halal Haribo ( DS calls them “Halalibos”) in some supermarkets, but they are generally not veggie
Starburst are veggie though

mindproject · 11/08/2019 10:37

Homemade hummus, falafel, flatbread
Bombay potato and cauliflower curry
Mushroom filo pie
Marinated tofu and veg kebabs
Vegi burgers and homemade coleslaw

You could do lots of vegetable side dishes for everyone and then put a few vegi sausages on the bbq or in the oven.

Sorry, didn't read the whole thread. Glad it went well.

Myshitisreal · 12/08/2019 09:53

Awwww really glad it went well for you. It sounds like your friend didn't want to put you out to much bless. That haribo list is great, husband knows about the strawberries but we can look for the others now. Marks veggie Percy pigs and Colin the 🐛 are great. They also do little 50p packs of veggie cola bottles which usually cost a fortune. Only mentioning for the others on the thread who may be interested.

You're a very thoughtful friend ♥

Myshitisreal · 12/08/2019 09:54

Oh and thank you for the recipe 😁👍

ReeReeR · 12/08/2019 12:47

No prob hopefully you can read it. You basically put the satay ingredients in a blender and then use half to coat the chicken and grill and can use half as a dipping sauce then make the noodle sauce in the blender too
