Marmite

I’m nearly 37 years old and I’ve never had marmite.

How is best to try it?

important that it is white toast op. sainsbury's sandwich loaf from the bakery is excellent with marm. it's also essential that you use only a tiny amount and a poached egg on top is the pinnacle of fine breakfasting (i cut most of the white off, i am a queen) . when we moved house recently the box containing the bread accessories was simply labelled "marmite".

mildshock · 04/08/2019 22:18

I'm not a marmite fan as such, but I do like to add a 1/2 tsp to cauliflower cheese when I make a Sunday lunch. Everyone seems to enjoy it more than without

Herocomplex · 04/08/2019 22:21

Merry I think granary toast is acceptable as well at a pinch, as long as there is sufficient butter. Never wholemeal though.

Jedimastermama · 04/08/2019 22:23

Cheese and marmite toasties - yum!

Amiable · 04/08/2019 22:26

Or a"student pizza" - toast, marmite, ketchup and grilled cheese. Yum!

Longdistance · 04/08/2019 22:30

Pop your slice into the toaster, butter it til it’s squidgy, nice thin layer of my mate 😋

Rachelover40 · 04/08/2019 23:16

It's lovely on buttered toast but, as already suggested, don't overdo the Marmite. Or good in a sandwich.

What AndNoneForGretchenWieners above said sounds delicious!

AquaPris · 04/08/2019 23:36

Omg. I first tried it a year ago on a cheese toasty. Very thinly layered or on buttered toast and it is good of the gods. I have also drunkenly eaten lashings of it on a baguette Blush

ronconcoke · 07/08/2019 22:45

I LOVE marmite....on toast (any sort, doesn't have to be white) but also it's divine on Matzah, as well as Challah (plaited white loaf found in waitrose or kosher bakeries, Maybe other supermarkets as well). My dc also love it on all 3 of those. DH however is from South America and can't stand the stuff. Almost forgot to say: always have it with butter/marge (I'm not fussy) and always spread thinly.

GodDammitAmy · 07/08/2019 22:51

I saw this in Tesco yesterday. Food of the gods.

Marmite
GodDammitAmy · 07/08/2019 22:52

How did you get on DeepfriedPizza? Are you buried under a pile of warm crumpets now?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/08/2019 18:20

@GodDammitAmy I thought I had invented that combo!

DeepfriedPizza · 11/08/2019 15:44

Sorry for the lack of update. I only managed to buy it today so going to try it later

Just had a toasted cheese and Marmite sandwich, another one for the recipe book!

DeepfriedPizza · 13/08/2019 08:17

Oh my god. How do you eat that? Its the worst thing I've ever tasted.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/08/2019 09:40

It’s delicious!. Your just not a marmite person, you either are or your not.

AloneLonelyLoner · 13/08/2019 12:04

Get a grip @DeepfriedPizza and try again. It's like cigs, you just have to stick at it!

MrsTumbletap · 13/08/2019 12:20

Hot crumpet, butter on top, Marmite, Grated cheese

In a sandwich with dairylea and ham

Marmite and cheese toasted sandwich/panini

On bread with butter

Toast with butter, marmite, beans in top, cheese on top of that.

Marmite and cucumber sandwich

MrsTumbletap · 13/08/2019 12:23

Maybe you did it too strong OP?

You need to start slowly, my DH used to hate it, but I used to just give him the tiniest little bit with cheese and now he loves it.

Just think it's a salty spread. It just adds a bit of a punch to a boring cheese sandwich etc.

Do you like Soy sauce? - salty
Do you like gravy? - salty
Do you like feta? - salty

DeepfriedPizza · 13/08/2019 15:52

I did a teeny weeny bit first but it was horrible.

I love salty things so I’m surprised. Now I’m not sure what to do with the rest of the jar

OP posts:
SallyWD · 13/08/2019 15:55

On toast with lots of butter or on toast with avocado.

SallyWD · 13/08/2019 15:56

Oh I forget! Cheese and marmite toasties are delicious! And crumpets with marmite and cheese. Just a warning. Use very little to between with because it has an extremely strong flavour.

justthecat · 13/08/2019 16:04

I add it when making savoury mince and beef casserole.
Lovely on toast with a egg

TheDogsMother · 13/08/2019 16:12

Post the rest of the jar to me !!

Wow Marmite Peanut Butter. I'd never heard of that. Two of my favourite things in one jar.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 13/08/2019 16:51

I once had a large jar of Marmite confiscated at the airport. It's a paste, apparently, so banned. Put a very damp start on the holiday.😔
