Substitute for dashi stock/broth?

I don't have any and a quick scan of what the supermarkets stock doesn't come up with anything. Can I just use stock and season with soy, in a pinch? I've looked at how to make your own and can see it's not really like a usual stock, but I don't have the necessary ingredients to make it anyway.

Fish stock, but possibly not full strength depending on what you are making and your personal taste. Dashi doesn't have soy sauce in it.

FYI - Waitrose carries it if you wanted to buy it on the future

Thanks for the reply. I thought maybe soy could give it some of that savoury-ness. I don't have fish stock, but I have vegetable and chicken, and also fish sauce. I'll experiment. Thanks for the Waitrose tip.

I love oyakodon! I all the time! 😋 I never use dashi I just use extra mirin. 🤭 I think fish sauce may be a bit overpowering so go easy on it. Just add it to taste.

I usually substitute dashi with nam pla and hot water.
