What can I use in place of tomatoes?

Most recipes I'm looking at calls for either 400g chopped tinned tomatoes or passata. I don't mind having tomatoes but I can't have too much of it otherwise it tastes horrible. Tried sugar and everything else but it still has that awful tang which my family and I really don't like. What can I replace instead? I don't mind using some tomatoes but what can I use to replace the rest of it? Would stock and corn flour be ok? I've really no idea lol. Thanks in advance

I think diluting the tomatoes with a mix of stock and cornflour would just give you a gluey texture. You can't really replace tomatoes with anything else, possibly roasted red pepper would give some of the colour and sweetness.

There isn’t much to directly replace tomatoes. This red pepper sauce www.amazon.co.uk/Roasted-Pepper-Relish-Grannys-Secret/dp/B00KZBS6W8?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 can be used for things like a pizza. But its very expensive and not quite the same.

My DS has a tomato allergy so we’ve had to research alternatives and this is the best we’ve found

Why not add a good glut of tomato ketchup? I find that takes any bitterness off the tomatoes.

Glug even

It depends entirely on the dish you want to make? Something like bolognese can be made with a few fresh tomatoes so you still get the acidity and flavour but not too much.

List some things you want to make and I’ll give you some different options.

you an use grated courgette instead. pretty inoffensive taste wise.

Exactly what Mustard said, it entirely depends on the recipe.

I use tomato sauce in pasta sometimes.

Or how about red pesto?

carla1983 · 15/06/2019 16:35

I can't eat tomatoes as they give me silent reflux (GERD)

I've learned to avoid or adapt recipes that contain them. E.g. a cottage pie I find flour and red wine instead of tomatoes gives that acidity and thickness that tomatoes have.

Salad nicoise, I just leave the tomatoes out or replace them with red peppers.

It can be tricky with some recipes. Obviously most Italian ones are out

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/06/2019 23:54

Tomatoes don't belong in shepherds pie or salad nicoise anyway!

Thanks all. Looks like I'm quite limited then! I might just give it a try and see how it tastes.... try and get used to it perhaps. I really don't think it will be to my liking but the spices in the recipe might alter it.
