Hot cross buns

We live abroad, and DP craves hot cross buns, especially at the traditional time of the year. I've never done much baking, but I've been trying. He likes them spicy, and in my latest attempt I doubled up the amount in my Good Housekeeping cookery book - to 1lb flour I added 3 level tsp of cinammon, same of allspice and half tsp of nutmeg. Still not spicy enough, and I agree although there is rather too much hotness (imo) from the allspice. Any advice?

It's not the traditional time of year. Just tell him he has to wait until next year! Where do you live? If you can get panettone, just toast that - tastes more or less the same.

I hate 'spices' so I always reduce the amount!!!! LOL
However, I would suggest only using mixed spice instead of cinnamon and allspice. Maybe 2 [or possibly 3] teaspoons of that would work and give a better balance of flavour?
Good luck.

Thanks, will definitely try the mixed spice. Interesting about the panettone, we're in France, but you never know.

Yeah I wouldn’t use allspice at all, it has a distinctive flavour. I’d use mixed spice and cinnamon instead.
