Urgent advice needed please: how long to bake?

Hello lovely Mumsnetters. Please can the experienced bakers amongst you advise me:

Recipe called for batter to baked in one 23cm tin for 1hr 15mins at 160c. But I divided it into two 23cm tins which went in 25 mins ago. Cakes are already risen and golden (will try to post pic) and I am panicking that they will burn if I leave for the full 1hr 15. But also fear they will fall if I pull them out of the oven to test or to cover with foil. Please help - novice baker here.

TIA for any help

Yes they will burn, take them out!!

And test with a skewer or sharp knife to make sure they're cooked in the middle. If it comes out clean not wet then the cakes are done.

If you divide a cake into two tins it will be half as thick and take less time to cook through.

You can open the oven door to look, but make sure no windows or doors are open to let colder air in. Look at the cake and see if its coming away from the sides slightly, (ie shrunk a bit), then gently press the top. If it springs back its done. Or use a small wooden toothpick and insert in the middle. If it comes out clean it's done. 25 minutes is about right for half the mixture. Hope its delicious and if not... you can always make trifle with it!

They will take far less than 1 hour 15. I'd probably give them another 5/10 minutes then check and cover if necessary. Another sign of being ready is that the cake is just starting to come away from the side of the tins.

Ok opened oven door. Cakes were risen but not as golden as they looked through my ( less than sparkling oven windowBlush). Were still a doughy colour and not shrunk away from sides at all. Another 5 mins? 10? Thanks again!

Cover with tin foil and drop temp to 140 and then check in 10 mins

Also, stick a skewer or sharp knife in the thickest part and see if it comes out clean. Opening the oven door won’t ruin it at this point.

Ok, followed instructions and have just taken them out. Looking good, I think!! And skewer inserted is almost dry - one or two minuscule crumbs clinging. So I'll leave to cool.

Thanks again - very grateful for the good advice
