Baumkuchen—is it worth the effort?

I have to make a cake for a special occasion and this looks amazing, but I'm not into style-over-substance baking.

Have you ever made this and is it worth the effort?

Interested in your replies having looked it up. I also need to make a special cake.

When I've seen it being cooked, it's been on a rotating spit. How would you do that at home?

I don’t think I have ever had a homemade Baumkuchen. The ones I have had were ok, but not very spectacular.
A homemade Black Forest gateau would get my vote!

Justajot apparently you grill it and brush each layer on with a pastry brush. It does sound like a faff.

QueenofCBA That's what I was wondering about. It looks pretty, but I go for flavour every time!

I've never made a Black Forest either—again, the ones I've tried when 'out' look greet but lack in flavour.
