Things you would expect to be vegetarian that aren't!

Off the back of my previous thread Things you never knew were vegetarian? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/foodandd_recipes/3566566-things-you-never-knew-were-vegetarian

As suggested I am asking the reverse question!

What food items/products have you discovered that you would expect to be vegetarian friendly but aren't??

The Worcester sauce thing was a revelation to me, I already knew about cheese and onion crisps.

Campari has cochineal colouring to make it pink.

IMO the Sacla dairy free pesto is the best, and widely available.

I was actually really surprised when I was told Parmesan wasn’t vegetarian

Nobody believes me when I tell them it isn't veggie. Even vegetarians don't tend to believe me and think I'm making things up Hmm.

I bought a potato gratin bake type thing in M and S the other day that I didn’t bother to check, only to find it had chicken stock in.

I contacted Waitrose about a certain crisp. It was something like tortilla chips with olive and something. Stupidly I didn’t check and only found when I got home it had pork in it. I told them that as a supermarket with a Jewish heritage they should know better.

Oh, and muller light yoghurts.

A little while ago I used a tomato pasta sauce (can't remember the name of it) and the house started to smell really meaty as it heated up. It was made with beef stock.

Not just French onion soup but any soup especially in cafes and restaurants.

When I first turned veggie it was far harder to check.

I found sort of by accident after turning veggie that I have what I believe to be a food intolerance particularly with red meat and red meat products. I'd always had stomach issues all my life, when I went veggie they calmed down a lot but on a few occasions they flared up and after a couple of incidents I realised and this was confirmed with some checking that I'd unwittingly had meat/meat products.

One of those occasions was a "vegetable" soup which was made with beef stock.

I've even been in chain restaurants where a soup has been marked with the green "v" but when I've asked the stock is meat - I've complained formally about those.

Even now I ask about the stock as "vegetable" isn't the same as "vegetarian"

I use the sacla veggie pesto.

A ridiculous ammount of yoghurts inc muller light, most 'greek style' yogs, activia yog,
Chocolate refridgerated pudding pots -
Kipling cakes - so many mostly the pink ones
I remember picking up a packet of cereal a while ago with beef gelatine it might have been shreddies?

Hippopotas · 28/04/2019 18:16

I’m so annoyed about peanut m&ms. I’m glad party rings are now they are my favourite biscuit and years ago when I was veggie I was sad I couldn’t have them.

Back on the veggie train now.

Deathraystare · 03/05/2019 11:39

Some hard margarine had fish oil in and so did some tinned sponge puds!

GummyGoddess · 03/05/2019 11:45

Chocolate yoghurts, most have pork gelatine. I won't eat pork so took ages to find one with beef gelatine instead.
