Just found out I'm gluten intolerant

Hi I've just found out through various tests that I'm gluten intolerant . It's linked to other ailments I have such as ibs , fibromyalgia, psoriasis and migraines .

I literally don't know where to start (waiting for appointment with a dietician ) probably will be waiting a while ! Apart from the obvious being bread . What else contains gluten and what should I avoid eating ? Any advice would be really appreciated !

Biscuits, cakes, pizza - although there are gluten free versions. Check sausages, burgers, etc. Too. There are naturally gluten free foods e.g. potatoes, rice, fruit, veg, meat, etc. Gluten containing ingredients have to be named on packaging so check before you buy

This is a good place to start!

Anything made with wheat is out, so pasta. Wheat, barley, rye and spelt are out.

Rice, buckwheat, corn and maize are OK.

Oats you have to check.

Cakes, biscuits and baked goods are out, as is proper bread.

A lot of processed food has gluten, especially anything with vinegar (malt). Beers are mostly out.

I would cruise the gluten free ranges as that will show you what things need to be replaced.

Vinegar and soy sauce are out too.

I've been gf for 5 years or so and found an alternative to almost everything, its not as bad as you first think.

BrightSpells · 16/04/2019 23:13

Sainsbury's do the best gluten free pasta imo.

GF macaroni is ace, and cooks in about 3 mins so even faster macaroni cheese.

Who exactly was it that said you should cut gluten? And what tests did they do?

ppeatfruit · 17/04/2019 16:24

Tamari has no wheat in it. It's a nice soya sauce. There are lots of GF pastas; most of them are nicer than the wheat ones IMO. I would go to my local Health Food shops, they have loads of choices.

No rye, no wheat, no barley, no oats (unless state gluten free). All of these should be in bold on ingredients list somread everything.

Be aware of cross contamination, somhave your own butter, jam, etc. Your own toaster.

Join some of the coeliac fb groups for advice. Coealiacs in the U.K. is a good group. I use Pinterest quite a bit for recipes.
