Informal birthday dinner. What would you cook?

My family are coming around for dad’s birthday this weekend and I have offered to cook.
It will be a plates on knees job as we don’t have enough room around the table.
In the past I have done
Pulled pork
Chilli
Buffet food
Quiche
Pizzas
Curry etc

But now I am stuck. I am feeding 6 adults and a toddler.
Please mumsnet hit me with your best ideas before I admit defeat and order an inevitably disappointing takeaway.

I did Jamie Oliver’s beer can chicken and his flatbreads - with salads - recently, which went down well.

Jamie Oliver's slow roast lamb shoulder with mash on the side and some greens? Very fast and you cook well in advance, a shoulder would feed six people easily... maybe apple crumble for after

How about a chicken and sausage gumbo? A bit different and everyone always loves it as its got familiar ingredients but most people haven't had it before. Cook in advance and just heat and serve with rice.
Use a decent Polish smoked sausage.

If you are thinking takeaway as a back up then you could make a lovely home made Thai or Chinese meal? You could make a few different bits and pieces to cater for various tastes. And you can buy in the starter stuff like spring rolls or whatever which makes it a bit easier.

A Moroccan tagine could be lovely. Yes it's basically just stew but you can really glam it up with lovely sides like flatbreads, jewelled couscous, fancy salads etc. That would make it feel really special.

Thank you for all of the replies. I have gone with a beef Bourguignon and birthday cake for pudding.
Hope it comes out ok.
