Abneyandteal19 · 29/12/2018 09:31

Have come home from the PILs who always buy way too much food with a whole ham!! Use by 3rd Jan- it's massive!! Ideas of what to do with it please, I'm not the greatest cook but willing to try! Really hate to waste food so want to try to use as much as possible.
To feed DH, me and DS age 3 and DS age 1
DS3 is allergic to eggs and nuts.
Thanks!!!

Carbonara Wink

Aquiver · 29/12/2018 09:44

Ooh lucky you! Here are some suggestions:

Ham salads / sandwiches
Have in thick slices with chips and peas
Add to macaroni cheese / pastas
Add chopped ham to soups (pea, lentil etc)
Make chicken / turkey and ham pies

Sliced ham can also be frozen.

Thank you!!
Mixing with mac and cheese is great ideas- the boys love that! Thanks

Carbonara good for me and DH but not boys

I did think soup but whenever I make it we never seem to eat it all! Need to make a smaller batch

Omelettes, chicken and ham pie, add to cheesy pasta bake, ham and mushroom pizza. Can you freeze some of it?

yawning801 · 29/12/2018 16:27

Carbonara has eggs in it?
I second macaroni cheese. Also I've heard of putting it in chicken and ham pie.

Badadadum · 29/12/2018 18:46

Ham egg and chips!

Wolfcub · 29/12/2018 18:51

Hamaroni cheese
Croque monseuir bake
Ham slosh
Slice and freeze for sandwiches

TheGreenDot · 29/12/2018 18:53

Slow cook in apple juice. Add turkey or chicken. Make pies and reduce down left over apple juice to make a gravy - add white wine.
Yum.

Nacreous · 29/12/2018 18:54

Is it cooked?

Assuming the answer is yes:

I'd make a ham potato dauphinoise I think!

Ham and pea risotto always good.

Sliced cold with roasties and veg? Or mash and veg.

Sandwiches, obviously.

Cubed in cheesey tomatoey pasta?

Sparklfairy · 29/12/2018 18:55

I do a version of 'carbonara' without eggs. Ham, maybe mushrooms, garlic, cream, pepper to taste.

Mayrhofen · 29/12/2018 18:58

Cook it, slice it and freeze it in batches. Then use it periodically in recipes such as those above. Just used the last of mine today in pea and ham soup,

Abneyandteal19 · 29/12/2018 19:05

Thank you all some great ideas- it's already cooked- can I still freeze some then?

I think it will be this: currently drooling over it here and making plans for the new year leftovers!

MsMamaNature · 29/12/2018 19:40

Had ham tonight with mounds of mashed potato, cauliflower cheese and veg. If it's a huge ham I'd slice it up into portions and freeze some of it so it doesn't go past its use-by-date and then pick and choose from the above recipe ideas.

Wolfcub · 29/12/2018 19:41

Ham slosh Is an odd thing my mother makes so a round Pyrex dish with mash all around the sides to build a sort of reverse most, the top gets roughed up so it browns and crisps in the over. You make a sauce/ casserole with ham, onion, mushrooms and tomatoes and fill the middle - whack it in the oven until the potato is nice and brown on top and everything is bubbling. Looks terrible once served, tastes divine

thismeansnothing · 29/12/2018 19:48

I had a ham joint which yesterday we had as a mini roast with left over veggie bits from Xmas day.

Tonight we've had ham, egg, chips, peas, chutney.

Probs get a butty/omlette out of some tomorrow. Then for tea the ham n sprout stir fry with brown rice that nigella does

FeedingFrenzy5 · 30/12/2018 08:41

I made a ham lasagne last night with the last of our leftovers. Fry up a load of mushrooms then mix into a bechamel with parsley and ham. Layer up with lasagne sheets and parmesan. Surprisingly delicious and easy - like making maceroni cheese but no need to pre cook the pasta. I was inspired by a Diana Henry recipe called vincisgrassi, which sounds much more indulgent (think Parma ham, cream, truffles...).

kateandme · 30/12/2018 18:12

make a white sauce.add tin of sweetcorn and lots of pepper.and then mix through your ham.(great if you have turkey to mx in with it too)with this either have with rice or make it into a pie.it sound mehh but try it its delish and now family fave.
