Good grief, Delia puts bananas in her Traditional English Trifle.

That can’t be right can it? I’ve never had a banana in my trifle and have no intention of starting.

Think I will just stick with sponges, sherry, raspberries (+ rasp jam), custard, cream, silver dragees.

To jelly or not to jelly?

I can't bear trifle. It's pretty much my food hell. So many horrible things:
Wet sponge - yuck
Jelly with bits of sponge in it so it's got a weird grainy texture - yuck
Cold custard - yuck
The whole soft, slushy slimy overall texture - yuck.
I know the rest of the world adores trifle, but I can't for the life of me understand why

Agree totally, with the addition of "alcohol in puddings is just wrong".

Is this the one out of her Christmas book? If so, it’s great.

SenecaFalls · 20/12/2018 20:24

There is a classic Southern US dessert called banana pudding that is really a trifle. It's layers of thin vanilla wafers, custard, and bananas, topped off with whipped cream. Seriously, y'all, it is the food of the gods.

wombatron · 20/12/2018 20:31

We break all sorts of rules I'm sure..... but ours is Swiss roll (no cream in it just jam), summer fruits filling (canned), custard and then whipped double cream. Sprinkled with flake on top. No alcohol and no fresh fruit or jelly. It didn't occur to me that no one else made it that way!

mikado1 · 20/12/2018 21:06

I'm pretty sure Rachel put banana in her trifle, along with sautéed onions, peas and mince! ;)

Mum rang back...
It’s called “Dream Topping” apparently Grin

The food of the gods Grin

ScribblyGum · 20/12/2018 21:42

What is this Dream Topping then?

OP posts:
ScribblyGum · 20/12/2018 21:45

Have googled, so it’s sort of like custard but not yellow.

There are trifles without jelly? Confused

TwiceMagic · 20/12/2018 21:55

I agree @QuantumWeatherButterfly. I do not like trifle one bit. My kids don’t either. There’ll be no trifle in this house at Christmas. 😄

Yearofthemum · 20/12/2018 23:16

What do you mean, no jelly?! Trifle always has had jelly.

Mine is jelly, raspberries (in the jelly), sherry, custard and cream. Fruit on top.

wowfudge · 21/12/2018 07:47

Dream Topping? Ye gads that'll be nowhere near any trifle I make!

MyBreadIsEggy · 21/12/2018 08:52

Scribbly it’s like fake whipped cream loaded with sugar Grin
Comes in a sachet, whip it with milk and bam!

Found jelly with sparkles in it! [fancy trifle jelly layer emoticon]. I'm going with jelly.

Also found the dream topping and purchased but just for an experiment, not for the trifle.

Xpost!

I'll feed it to the kids first, sounds just up their street.
