Slow cooking beef

Does anyone have any special beef recipes for either the slow cooker or oven?

I'm hosting people for a special meal and want to cook beef, without it ending up like Irish stew or English school dinner, both of which I think are not special enough for the occasion.

Foreign, recipes welcome!

Absolute favourite, full of flavour and can be made in slow cooker

That was quick! Thank you.
I'll check those out. Is there a particular stroganoff?

Olaf I'm really tempted by that recipe as I actually the recent and proud owner of an unused tub of tamarind paste from the local deli. Can thus be slow cooked, or would the coconut milk split?

That massaman recipe is fab, I always use it. It's pretty forgiving if you leave out the odd ingredient, I've always used kaffir lime leaves but have occasionally left out palm sugar or fish sauce.

Another favourite is Hugh's shin of beef with ginger and soy - I use brisket. Not tried it in the slow cooker but should work well, it doesn't have a lot of liquid anyway so that ought to work OK in a slow cooker.

I've cooked coconut milk in a slow cooker without it splitting (for a curry though) and the recipe gets you to heat the curry paste in a frying pan and add the coconut milk and heat through before transferring to the slow cooker. I tried to skip that step once and it did split. So I recommend not putting coconut milk in cold!

I love Nigella's beef carbonnade, a winter staple in this house. Lovely served with mash, crusty bread or dumplings...
