Making your own baby food

Hi my 4 1/2 month old is refusing allot of baby jar food and really doesn't like the deserts, I'm thinking of trying to make my own food does anybody have any tips on how to make and what to use? He's being so fussy with his bottles but also doesn't like allot of jar food. Thankyou Natalie

Why are you persevering? Maybe they aren't ready for weaning as you're doing it quite early

I'd try again at 6 months, my 4 month old has no interest in food so I've not considered weaning yet.

4.5 months is young to wean, maybe try baby led weaning at 6 months?

Just make normal food but cut out salt and sugar. Babies just eat normal food (ideally, they may spit a curry in your face).

Oh sorry, missed that this is a 4.5month old. If they don’t want the basic food and deserts then they are probably not ready. Hold off for another month or so.

He is ready I can tell, I only give him his porridge for breakfast with a bottle and 1 meal a day as milk isn't enough for him anymore so he's not fully weaned, he still has plenty of milk, He just isn't liking the jar food. I started my 3 year old daughter when I knew she was ready and she liked the jar food but my 4 1/2 month old isn't liking them

What signs have you seen in him that he's ready for solids? At that age it does sound like he might not be interested yet. If it's only that he's feeding all the time and/or draining bottles, you could just up his milk intake for a few weeks then try solids again later. If he was grabbing the spoon and trying to feed himself, then maybe smooth blended single fruit and veg purees. But the current NHS advice is to wait until 6 months so no rush if he's not bothered

He has a few he likes and eats the lot, loved banna pouches but nothing else so he's having some things but doesn't like most of them

Or just wait 😂 ... honestly! Your baby clearly isn't ready!

Hes on cow and gate hungry baby, has 8oz ever 3 hours and that just isn't satisfying him. He sleeps 7 til 7.30am

This last few days he's been so fussy with his milk to he's only been having like 5oz instead of 8 but I can tell he's still hungry just isn't having the rest of his milk, he's gone wingy

He sleeps all night. What makes you think he needs food as well as milk?

Or it could be that he had a growth spurt and now doesn't need as much milk

He's also very greedy with his milk like he's never been fed before

Honestly my dd would refuse milk. And wouldn't try food, I'd give her water (boiled and cooled) and she was fine with that until she did start eating meals properly

There’s really no point trying to convince OP. Mums are often absolutely adamant their baby needs real food. It’s up to them in the end.

As he is still too young to wean (unless medical advised), if he is hungry, give him more milk.

Maybe he just doesn't like the taste of food in jars? My DD would only eat one type of Hipp Organic food (veg lasagne eaten cold), DS wouldn't touch anything in jars. I started with steamed veg, then used the Annabel Karmel cookbook of just gave them what we were eating as i rarely use salt.

However DD was weaned at 4 months (as advised at the time) but DS wouldn't touch food at that age. He was closer to 7 months before he was interested in food.

If he's hungry, baby food isn't going to fill him up. There are hardly any calories in fruit or veg or even porridge compared to breast or formula milk.

If you want to feed him solids, either give him chunks of fruit/veg to grapple with, or cook fruit and veg and blend it.

But be careful filling him up with fruit and veg because it'll make him take less milk which will make him hungrier ...

I'm sure OP knows what she's doing.

I steam sweet potato, carrot, butternut squash etc and then blend up with a bit of formula to make a smooth texture. Try that.

If we're having say a casserole or something then I blend that up too with milk again and my dd likes that too. She's 6 months though so a bit older but worth a try.

I think I'll give him abit longer of formula and see how he goes. He just seems to be going forward then backwards all the time. He's been constantly I'll to, had broncolitus twice, ended up in hospital just can't seem to fight any bugs off
