How to keep cucumbers fresh

Yet again I've taken the cucumber out of the fridge and found it's gone soggy. Has anyone any tips how to store to keep them fresh?

Apparently it's best to store them at room temperature, not in the fridge as they don't like temp below 50 Fahrenheit which is 10 centigrade

Buy a half so it's less waste?
I've sliced one up and put it in vinegar. Cider vinegar weakened with drop of water and salt. My mum used to add sugar instead.
I do like vinegar - the taste and the way it preserves.
