How to make fondant?

Hi there

I'm wanting to bake a birthday cake for my DD,

A unicorn one but need help making fondant

I normally buy the ready to roll fondant but wanted to make it myself as it tastes better and can not justify spending £40 on a u cake my DD won't remember form the local bakers if found on instagram

When baking a birthday cake do you make your own jam

Any birthday cake recipes would be great and any recipes for how to make fondant please

Marshmallow fondant icing I've used this recipe for fondant and found it really good. Seems to hold together without cracking too much which is probably the gelatin helping it. If I'm making a bright colour I don't even use just white marshmallows as the colouring hides it

Do you have any recipes you follow for the cake and filling?

I normally bake the Betty Crocker cakes lol but though il make it all homemade xx

I always used this recipe for the cake.

And just scale it up if you want a bigger cake - eg do 4 eggs and then double up everything else or 6 eggs and then times everything else by 3.
Very easy to make and comes out nice.
I would just use normal jam.
And you can buy fontant icing sugar to mix to make your own : here "To make fondant icing: 225g/8oz Tate & Lyle Fairtrade Fondant Icing 2-4 tbsp water Sift the fondant icing sugar into a bowl, gradually beat in enough water to give a smooth icing consistency of thick cream. Add a few drops of food colouring or flavouring if desired. Use immediately. Brush the surface of the cake or 12 small cakes with a thin apricot glaze. Spoon the fondant icing over the surface to cover evenly, do not move until set. Makes sufficient to cover the top of a 18cm/7inch to 20cm/8in cake or 12 Fairy cakes. To make modelling icing: Use double the amount of icing sugar and follow the method above. Keep adding the icing sugar until the mixture forms into a ball, turn onto a work surface dusted with a little more icing sugar and knead until smooth. To make shapes either roll out and use a cutter or mould into shapes using your hands."
If you are cutting the cake to shape it then I would recommend freezing it and taking it out the freezer to work on, it holds its shape better if you're cutting it eg cutting it from a round cake to a specific shape.

yes you could add colouring or flavouring to the icing, definitely!
