Help me find the cheese!!!

So a couple of years ago we went to a party of an old college who we have lost touch with.

On the food table was a selection of the most amazing cheeses. All cheers were roundish and covered in different colored wax. They weren't your bog standard chedders. All sorts of flavours and also the most devine strong cheeses. I think mostly varieties of chedders and glousters and leisters.

I'll never find out where they were from but was wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere that does a range of lovely cheeses as my dad is as cheese mad as me and I'd love to gift him some for Christmas.

I'm on a bit of a budget though.

Mmm, cheese! Where are you based? The best cheese shops tend to be the smaller independent ones so it depends where you are. It will be expensive but it's better to buy a small amount of good cheese than a huge wheel of nasty plastic, IMO.

If you go to a cheesemongers then you can try a little before you buy. I J Mellis in Edinburgh was fab (it’s maybe still there, but I’m not). Love cheese, mmmmm!

Paxton & whitfield do mail order cheese and have shops so you can try before you buy if you are nearby, can highly recommend I used to work with them

The Cheese Shed does some fabulous selections. DH buys me a box of cheese every year for Christmas. He knows me well.

I didn't know cheese mongers were a thing? I know my local garden centre has a cheese counter, would that be simelar?

Was going to suggest the Cheshire cheese company. The sticky toffee and Rioja and caramelised onion are amazing. Black Bob is pretty damn good too!!!

Una, I’ve just found out they have a fb page. Glutton for punishment that I am - it all looks so good! Oh the smell of Mellis’, and it was so cold too! Just fabulous.

If you ever find yourself in Oxford, there's a lovely shop called the Jericho Cheese Company on Little Clarendon Street. They only do local cheeses so a limited selection, but they are soooo tasty.

There are other cheese shops in Oxford but I can't vouch for them personally.

I suspect it will be Snowdonia listed above. My favourite hard cheese ever are made by them, especially the whisky infused one.
