Marinating thawing chicken?

Hi,
I’m planning on making a curry tonight however the only chicken I have is frozen. I took it out the freezer this morning to defrost, to save me some time later I wondered if I can put a marinade onto my frozen chicken that’s defrosting in the fridge? Without giving anyone an upset tummy !

Thanks for taking the time to read, I look forward to the responses 👍

I can't see why not.

I've always been told to discard any leftover marinade after transferring the chicken to a cooking pan, so that might be the trick to avoid any food poisoning potential. You haven't said that you're going to marinade in the actual sauce, but if you meant to, maybe that's worth avoiding? Marinade with flavourings that ere in the sauce, perhaps. Some crushed garlic, grated ginger and some of the dried spices, so it's a dry rub that will get wetter as the chicken defrosts? Then just cook in the normal way once you're ready.

Chicken doesn't really need much marinating - an hr will be plenty.

Yes, of course.

Thawing stuff is only dodgy if you're doing it in an environment that bacteria etc can get onto it, and it spends long enough time warm for those bugs to multiply and become an issue. So a long time out open in a sunbeam in the kitchen, not good - it'll be frozen inside but warm enough to cultivate bugs on the top. Mmm, salmonella surprise.

Defrosting in the fridge clearly bypasses that, unless you're pouring on a hot marinade (is there such a thing?) the meat will stay 5C and under preventing multiplication. The temporary 20C warmth of the marinade will just bring the chicken up from -18C (freezer temp) to zero or so.

Oh you guys are good! Thank you all for replying, like most of us, my good intentions failed and I ran out of time this morning and ended up just quickly marinating it before actually cooking it this evening. I sprinkled a bit of curry powder of the chicken in the end and that was all I was going to put over the frozen chicken earlier but it’s done now.
Again, thank you all for the advice and i’ll marinating it when frozen in the near future! Have a nice weekend all 😊
