Snacks to eat with coffee

13 replies

RunsforCake14 · 05/10/2018 10:21

My work in quite a physically active job which means by 10 or 11ish I'm starving and also need some caffeine.

I usually have a biscuit or two with my coffee but I'd like to find some alternatives that are a bit healthier. Crunching an apple doesn't taste right with coffee.
I'm happy to make snacks in advance but apart from flapjacks, I'm not sure what else to try.

Any suggestions? Thanks

raisons and dried cranberries

granola bars

rice cakes

Toasted oat clusters with nuts and dried fruit. You can make it yourself.

6 cups rolled oats (not instant or quick)
1/2 cup honey or maple syrup (maybe you can use a low-cal syrup?)
1 cup dried shredded coconut (optional)
some raw nuts and seeds

Mix all this together and spread on wax paper on a baking tray. Try to make it even, about 1/2" thickness max.

Put in oven at 350 for 20-30 minutes. It should be nicely toasted. Let cool completely and put into a sealed container. It should break apart pretty easy. Toss in some raisins or other dried fruit if you want.

Sweet, crunchy, and snacky. If you add the coconut, it tastes almost like a crunchy macaroon.

A slice of flapjack or a granola bar will have more calories in than a biscuit. Just have a plain digestive or rich tea. Or if its not the crunch of a biscuit you're after how about a square of dark chocolate.

Thanks for the great suggestions.
I guess I'm not too worried about counting the calories as I'll burn them off quite quickly.
Just need an few alternatives to having a couple of biscuits every day. I like the sweetness to counteract the coffee taste. I'm going to try some of these ideas next week.

I top slices of banana with peanut butter and a date...doesn't sound that exciting but it tastes AMAZING!

Dates stuffed with marzipan.

Baklava.

Finger of chocolate pushed into a soft milk roll.

Dates or any other dried fruit like apricot or figs, slit and stuffed with nuts.

My hubby's a gardener and works really hard, physically, so needs regular top ups. His go-to snacks are:

a box of unsalted mixed nuts, with dried fruit and dates (we buy and mix these ourselves so he avoids the things he doesn't like);

homemade flapjacks, which I oomph up with dried apricots, dates, cherries, skin-on peanuts...whatever I have that I can throw in;

Malt loaf or gingerbread / parkin;

a classic tea loaf, with loads of dried fruit - I freeze it sliced, and it defrosts in time for eating;

fruit scone or old fashioned rock cake.

Plus he always has a few kit kats or peanut brittle bars for the times when he's crashed completely and needs a fast fuel injection.

Nuts, salted or plain, crushed and mixed into melted dark chocolate with a spoon or two of peanut butter. Set on a lined tray in the fridge. Great and delicious snack with coffee!

These are great suggestions, thanks.
So far I've tried oatcakes with mango chutney on them. Rice cakes with butter. Chopped pear with peanut butter.
I'm going to get some dates and other dried fruit. I like the idea of adding them to dark chocolate.

Think I will be making scones/rock cakes and the nuts/chocolate/peanut butter combo this weekend.
No more boring biscuits!

I forgot one of the basics - two or three digestive biscuits with a few fingers of cheese. That mix of sweet and fat/protein really keeps him going and is portable. He takes that one cycling with him!

Digestive biscuits sandwiched together with cream cheese is an old favourite here. Brew Cake
