Shanghai Blues in Holborn is lovely - stylish Chinese. Dining room on left is gorgeous.

If you fancy a slightly different vibe to the usual central london stuff, there are loads of great places around Hoxton/Shoreditch. Haven't been back for a few months, but Great Eastern Dining Room was always great for modern Asian. But you're tripping over half decent restaurants around there now.

I'd take a look at toptable.co.uk...

I have just been to River Cafe...a bit noisy inside but food was great...very simply cooked and excellent ingredients...and it was quite common to share plates or swap courses on the menu (starters for mains for example)and nice wine for £26!

How about Busaba? It's a sight cheaper than Hakkasan, and still very good. You mention Hakkasan, are you looking for somewhere with Hakkasan prices?
Not sure you can book Busaba, but like this review says, the Store Street restaurant is much quieter (don't get there too late though). There are normally really long queues outside the Wardour Street one, but then you are in the heart of Soho for drinks before and after. Hmmmm
