My steak pie filling is missing something.

It's steak, salt, pepper, onion and a tb spoon ketchup.

It doesn't taste quite right somehow. I have allergies so using a stock cube is out.

Should I add some chopped celery or mushroom?.

Salt?
Sometimes it seems like recipes need more stuff, when what they need is salt.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/09/2018 16:44

Obvs you mentioned salt but I mean more salt!

dementedpixie · 01/09/2018 16:46

What are you allergic to? What about the gel stock melt things?

Armchairanarchist · 01/09/2018 16:50

Worcestershire sauce and a knorr beef stock cube.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/09/2018 16:51

It's got salt, I've found the way to make food taste like processed is to add enough salt to give a small horse a stroke Grin

Allergies to monosodium glutamate, cows milk, sulphites which are in dried onions, cornstarch, maltodextrin, wine.....

I found a MSG free stock cube but it had maltodextrin in it.

Hence making it and not just slinging a fray bentos in the trolley Grin

What in stock cubes are you allergic to?

AdaColeman · 01/09/2018 16:52

Red wine.

Lee & Perrins

Herbs such as thyme, bay leaf

Garlic

Black pepper

StoorieHoose · 01/09/2018 16:52

Worcester sauce and a big tablespoon of bistro best gravy powder. No to the veg. You can’t put veg in a steak pie

Lucked · 01/09/2018 16:54

Sausages! Okay I realise this is a west of Scotland thing and horrifies everyone else.

Agree brown or Worcester sauce may help.

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/09/2018 16:55

I'm palm oil free too. Because orangutans.

Mmm sausages in steak pie is the best!

OlennasWimple · 01/09/2018 16:55

Worcester sauce is my go to "needs something else"

SingingGoldfinch · 01/09/2018 16:58

Stilton! Yum!!!

Wolfiefan · 01/09/2018 16:58

I love chestnut mushrooms in steak pie.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/09/2018 16:58

Lucked, I live on the West coast too and nearly suggested sausages, but thought that's a bit weird if you've not been brought up with it.

MinaPaws · 01/09/2018 16:58

Finely chopped mushrooms, a splash of wine, some crushed, lightly fried garlic and some worcestershire sauce.

dementedpixie · 01/09/2018 16:59

What about those pouches of ready made stock?

nhssecretary · 01/09/2018 17:00

Stilton

Fluffycloudland77 · 01/09/2018 17:01

Arm The maltodextrin & cornstarch. It's usually made from high fructose corn syrup, which is heavily sulphited. I'm ok with maltodextrin if it's from potato starch.

Dh will be going out soon, shall I tell him to buy thyme? I only sprayed the bay trees recently, not sure they're edible yet.

Kidneys

Margaurette · 01/09/2018 23:08

Mustard?

Ollivander84 · 01/09/2018 23:28

Can you have marmite? That usually works

cdtaylornats · 02/09/2018 00:00

Crumble a bit of black pudding in.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/09/2018 12:33

I was going to buy kidney, probably will next time. I sliced mushrooms up and it worked well.

Just got to make suet pastry now. Not really steak pudding weather now though.
