Best recipe for a crumble

There are so many different variations on a crumble when I look at recipes online. I want to make an apple and rhubarb one this weekend. Do any of you have a fool proof recipe for one? Thanks

I make the best topping. 1 cup oats, 1 cup flour, half cup ground almonds, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 cup cubed butter. You can put anything on the underneath! In your case, I'd chop the apple (cooking apple) and rhubarb, sprinkle some sugar on top and bake covered for 10-15 mins before putting topping on. Depends how soft you want the fruit.

For topping I measure about equal amount of oats and butter (melted) and then (caster or brown) sugar to taste. And spices -cinnamon or mixed spice. I normally just chop apples and rhubarb quite small, add some honey to sweeten, then to oven but obviously if want very soft fruits, may need to pre-cook the fruits.

nope nope nope stop adding oats!topping is half fat to flour.stork works great.then almost same amount of white sugar to fat.
bottom is slightly cooked apples but still with some shape and bite so just soften them with some sugar in about cm of water.
if your using raw rhubarb also have to cook this with some sugar (we use lots but some don't) once again in a little bit of water.
we alawyas make loads of topping as its the best bit!
cook for 30 then check.

I used to do marg and flour only, but the addition of oats, nuts and replacing marg with butter is beautiful. I always get tons of compliments and can't eat crumble out anymore as it's not as good. (Marg still makes a lighter cake though).

Depends on preference but oats (and real butter) are winner for me. I do gluten free crumbles so use gf oats or even muesli. Nuts are nice addition as well true!
