Things to do with pears?

The pear tree in our garden has suddenly produced quite a lot of fruit this year, and I don't want them to go to waste. They're not the nicest pears to eat uncooked (not very sweet). I'm only vaguely aware that pears can be cooked with... I'll be having a good browse online, but is there anything any of you really love to cook or bake with pears?

Substitute in any recipe that calls for apple. Grate and freeze and substitute for 1/2 butter or oil in most baking recipes.

Someone posted a quick recipe on this thread that others have said was delicious

Thanks everyone! I'll attempt a cake at least, and the caramelised pears on the other thread sound lovely and quick to make. :)

Pear and ginger crumble - delicious sorry no recipe as I made it up as I went along but think lightly cook pears in water with a little sugar then add ginger , make a crumble topping and bake until golden, Ive also done just pears and added ginger into the crumble , or no ginger but use a chocolate sauce / custard .

Pear crumble, and put some chopped hazel nuts into the crumble top. Fab with cream.

Pear chutney - we had a Conference pear tree in our old garden. I miss it. The best pear chutney I made used some spices and raisins but no peppers or tomatoes.

I make a lovely pear tarte tatin - I think it's actually a Gordon ramsay recipe I found online. Delicious and very easy to do!

If you want to keep them going for longer, I had a similar tree and used to can them - something along the lines of this recipe. www.eatliverun.com/preserved-pears-with-ginger-and-star-anise-canning-for-beginners/
They're delicious with yogurt/on porridge/with ice cream for pudding and keep for up to a year. I think Waitrose also have a recipe for a pear and ginger preserve which is tasty.

For something savoury this is very yummy, it uses pears in its marinade.

Popping back to testify that Nigel Slater's pear and ginger cake was very good indeed, even without the icing, which I couldn't be bothered with! :)

poached in red wine, sugar and cinnamon stick until tender. Remove and reduce liquid to a warm syrup and serve with cream

Pear and dark chocolate crumble!

inquiquotiokixul · 27/09/2018 09:17

Poach pears in red wine with a spoonful of sugar, and serve for pudding with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.

Caramelised pear and gorgonzola cheese is the best pizza topping in the universe.

Pear, dolcelatte and walnut salad, ideally on some quite bitter salad leaves, is another great savoury way with pears.
