Hello,

My DS year 7 has to make a crumble at school. He is not keen on apple but loves cherry. I can foresee pitting the cherries to be tedious and time consuming. He obviously has limited time.

We are not trying to be fancy but do want it to be eaten when it gets home!

Any tips as how to quickly pit cherries or alternative crumble ideas to apple? Maybe they will let him use cherry filling (cheape, less hassle) but I think that might be classed as cheating Grin

Peach and raspberry is nice.
Apricot also v good.

Both would actually be quicker than apple as you don't need to peel.

You can buy tins of fruit pie filling, including cherry.

Or buy frozen, pitted cherries.

I often use frozen berries, or tinned apricots.

I hadn't thought of frozen pitted cherries!

I'm not sure he is keen on rhubarb.

Peach and raspberry is a possibility.

Tinned pitted black cherries would work, or stone the cherries at home and pack into a plastic tub for transport. Have you got a garlic press at home, lots of them include a cherry stoner, or look in any supermarket.

Banana crumble is delicious. Use brown sugar with the topping for a caramel-ish taste and add chocolate chips. If allowed (check if his school is nut free) add chopped peanuts to the topping as well.
I once did a pineapple crumble with coconut added to the crumble topping.

There are a few recipes about for savoury crumbles with vegetables and beans. I once saw one with courgette, tomatoes, onions and Parmesan in the topping. Delicious side dish with sausages or chicken.

Agree with PPs - pear is lovely.
Blueberry and apple? Apple will pad out the blueberry.
Or buy a bag of frozen mixed berries - sainsbos used to do economy bag with blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and possibly the odd cherry! They might still do it.
I like to add some semolina to the apple - it soaks up the watery juice that comes out and makes a thicker 'sauce' in the bottom. Have only been able to find semolina with the dried stuff in sainsbos.

Frozen pitted cherries work well. I then coarsely chop toasted almonds into the crumble mix and scatter flaked almonds on top.

We use frozen summer berries from supermarket and leaving them to defrost until needed...a nice mix in the bags you buy from both sainsburys and lidl

I do frozen berry crumble (sometimes add an apple to make it go further). I don't even defrost the berries.

Pear, rhubarb and strawberry - the rhubarb isn’t particularly noticeable.

Tinned cherries make an amazing crumble (particularly with almonds in the crumble mix). Other favourites here are pineapple, peaches or pears (tinned pears are way better than fresh ones which go a weird texture when cooked I think).
