Put a whole chicken in it with some stock, onions and other root veg, and pearl barley if you like it and leave to cook. The meat really falls off the bone, delicious!

If you eat meat, bolognese sauce/chilli works well. Also cubed pork, beef or lamb cooked in the slow cooker make fantastically tasty stews and very little prep.

Fry meat with garlic and onions in a little oil. Add in a little plain flour and stir into the fat/jucies. Add liquid. Can be stock, and optionally beer or wine. I find red wine or bitter/stout works well with beef. Red wine with lamb. White wine or cider with pork. But I always add a little stock too.

Vary this basic recipe by adding tinned tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, carrots, leeks, celery, different herbs/spices, beans, mushrooms (add cooked beans or mushrooms just an hour before end of cooking time), or a million and one other optional ingredients! This will keep you in lots of different stews for a long while!
I do find that if I cook chicken portions in the slow cooker, they go a bit stringy if over cooked and doesn't freeze that well. If anyone knows of a way around this, would appreciate it.
