Decorating question - sticking sprinkletti to fondant icing

It's dd's birthday this weekend and I've bought some sprinkletti to decorate her cake with - then forgot that I was planning on using fondant icing.

What the best way to get these to stick to the sides of the cake?

Just water? Or make a homemade sugar glue?

I'm nowhere near a cake decorating shop so will have to aim for a homemade approach.

Icing sugar mixed with water to make something very similar to Royal icing, needs to be good and thick to stay on and hold the sprinkles on.

Thanks - I ended up using some of the leftover fondant and heating it up in the microwave with a bit of water and mixing it to make a glue - it seems to have done the trick.
