Is Sumac supposed to smell rank?

I've made some lamb kebabs from a jamie Oliver book and they have sumac in. I've never used it before but my kitchen doesn't not have a welcoming, lovely smell at the moment- it smells awful! A bit like off meat (the lamb was fine, in date and smelt fine when I opened it). The sumac smells a bit funny in the tub but it's really strong in the kitchen. Has anyone found this?

The sumac i have smells vaguely citrussy - definitely not unpleasant- so I think maybe you have a dodgy one? What's the use by or best before on it?

It was brand new! Dp ate the kebabs but I only managed a bit, maybe I just don't like it!

I use it a lot and haver never noticed anything except a slight citrus smell. Some brands have crap such as added colour etc, so could it be that?
