Mackerel recipe for someone who doesn't like mackerel!

I need to get more oily fish into my diet and I keep reading that mackerel is a really good (and cheap) source. But I don't like it, it's too fishy! I want to learn to like it though so can anyone suggest any good recipes? Preferably nothing that stinks the house out as smells really linger in our small open plan house!

you need to try Jamie Oliver's fish wraps, its in his American book. They have a mango and chilli salsa in it as well as the mackerel.

Mackerel tempura is pretty delish. Mackerel pate on toast with chilli jam. It’s cold so avoid the fish smell, especially if you use tinned or precooked fillets as then there’s no cooling smells. I’d avoid any smoked mackerel too as I find that far more fishy smelling.

Smoked mackerel pasta...just flake into any spicy tomato sauce (bought or homemade) and add cooked pasta. It's delicious and someone who doesn't like fish enjoyed it when I made it for them. Or try something as simple as tinned mackerel in tomato sauce on toast. Also, if you blend tinned mackerel in tom sauce with some bought crabsticks and a bit if Greek yoghurt (I think?) It makes a lovely mackerel paté....

Second mackerel pate as an option, especially if you add capers or tomato or something with it. This whole thread is making me really hungry...

adds mackerel to shopping list

I swear in between journos fishing for stories MN is in part food companies posting things to tempt posters. You don’t work for the Mackerel Marketing Board to you OP? ;)

I really like smoked peppered mackerel - you taste the pepper and smoky flavour rather than the fish. I would just have that on its own, heated up with some boiled or roast potatoes and green veg.

If that doesn't appeal, what about sardines? I like a tin of sardines, drain the oil, or buy them in tomato sauce, mash up the contents of the tin (Try to keep eyes closed or ask someone to do it for you if you're bothered by tails and things!) and grill it on toast, like cheese on toast. You can top with cheese for an alternative to a tuna melt if you like.

I made this the other day, that was delicious. The mackerel stays cold, so doesn't smell. It's more of a lunch than dinner, though.

Ok definitely tempted by mango and chilli salsa recipe and also the smoked peppered...so really anything that masks the fishiness! Not a fan of pâté and I don't think I'm ready for mashing up sardines just yet! Defo don't work for their marketing lol!

If you can bear to grill mackerel fillets then serve with a horseradish and Greek yoghurt sauce, and maybe some boiled beetroot and new potatoes, that’s a very tasty light lunch. Oily fish are great. They are the only good natural source of vitamin D. You can get vit D enriched breakfast cereals though.

Mackerel curry - any fish flavour is masked by the tomato and spices

You could try a fish pie with smoked mackerel replacing the haddock.

I don't like smoked mackerel heated so always have it cold. Favourite way to eat it is chopped into a mixed salad with new potatoes and mayonnaise. It has to be eaten out of a pasta bowl, with a fork. Served on a plate, each item separated and with a knife and fork just tastes wrong!

Cooked makeral mixed with yogurt and horseradish popped on Melba toast.

I've made this mackerel fried rice for my fish hating family, and to my surprise they loved it. I'll make it again
