What am I doing wrong with my muffins?

I made blueberry muffins yesterday. Followed the recipe exactly. But although they taste gorgeous, they don’t have the traditional muffin shape. They are flat on the top.
What did I do wrong?

You might have overmixed them. Muffins are better when undermixed, streaks of flour are good

Could be partly over mixing, but I've also seen recipes that say to have the oven hotter for the first part of baking to get the top to really puff, then turn it down

I have the same problem. I love blueberry muffins, but mine never have the same taste and texture as store bought ones. I used to get blueberry muffin mix and make my own using that. Cheating, i know, but it was the nearest I ever got to replicating the same fluffiness. However, for a few years now I can't find blueberry muffin mix in the baking isles anywhere in the UK. I'm definitely bringing some back when I next go to the states.

Nigella' s recipe from Domestic Goddess works perfectly Every time for me and they are just like coffee shop muffins.

Add some baking powder to the mix to make them rise more.
(I want a blueberry muffin now!!)

Ah yes. I probably overmixed them. I used an electric whisk thinking I’d get more air into them. I did use baking powder though (as per the recipe)

I’ll try Nigella’s next time.

Thanks.
