Fun things to cook with a toddler, that aren’t sweet

I had a successful cheese biscuit ( basically pastry with cheese) making session today with dd 2.2. She surprised me by how well it kept her attention! So I’m after ideas for other thing we can cook together. Ideally savoury things, as she is a bit of a sugar demon, and I’d like her to enjoy cooking things that aren’t just biscuits or fairy cakes!

Any good suggestions?

Dumplings are easy and quick, and just what you need in this weather.

You could use plain scones as a cobbler topping for mince or casserole too.

pancakes
scrambled eggs
bread/breadrolls

bbc 'I can cook' has some nice oven recipes aimed at small dc. the oven risotto is nice.

Can't you make cheese straws with puff pastry? Can you tell I'm clueless?!

SleightOfMind · 03/03/2018 21:37

Depending n how tolerant you are with mess, and if you can trust DC not to lick fingers:
Making meatballs
Dipping stuff in egg then breadcrumbs (really messy!)
Rubbing fat into flour to make short pastry (can add cheese/olives/tomato paste/herbs etc)

Loads of little jobs that are part of a recipe too. Mine loved bashing chicken fillets etc with a rolling pin to flatten them.
Chopping & grating (with finger guard) was also v popular.

Mine loved making Octodogs

Cut hotdogs in half.

Snap spaghetti in half

Stab four strands of spaghetti through each hot dog piece.

Boil

It's not exactly cooking but it's fun Smile

Another vote here for pizza. My 2 year old loves making pizza with me. We cut out different shapes too. She won't eat a regular round pizza. It has to be hearts or stars! But she loves to flour the work surface for me and throw the dough around. Just try to prep the toppings before you start. Easy peasy.
