40th birthday food, small family gathering, gluten free, nut free HEEEELLLP

Dh didn't want a large party (miserable sod), just his immediate family for a formal'ish meal at our house.
So, 7 adults, 4 children.
One adult has coeliac disease, so no gluten and is also allergic to nuts.
My ds1 is allergic to eggs and nuts too.

So, I thought....
Anthony WT's Morrocan Butterflied Lamb here
with
Jamie's chickpea salad
Minted new pots
and another something North African to go with it - or can I just do something with asparagus/peas/beans?
Any other yummy North African/morrocan side orders you could recommend please?

Chicken breasts wraped in parma ham, homemade chips, picky salad stuff for children (lamb if they want it)

Now pudding is the problem.
MIL will make a gluten-free trifle for the coeliac guest, but I wanted something that looked a bit 'special' too.
The only thing I can find is strawbs with melted vanilla choc and bruleed in ramekins.
Has anybody PLEASE got any other ideas for suitable puds? Everything else seems to be filled with gluten.

delia has a choc torte in her christmas book that's just choc, cream and liquid glucose

How about a birthday cake? Nigella has a satsuma/clementine cake with no flour (uses ground almonds instead) - I have eaten it many times and it's delicious!

Gluten free, egg free, nut free pudding - apart from a feckin fruit salad, I'm stumped.

I would consider making up a pudding from some gluten free cakes or biscuits bought at Sainsburys.

if you can manage dairy products, you should be able to make something?

Morrocan side dishes - would couscous be suitable or does it contain gluten? (sorry to be ignorant!)

I have a chocolate mousse recipe that doesn't use eggs, flour, nuts etc - can dig it out if you'd like?

Also a good, easy-peasy one which looks fairly impressive and can be tarted up with fresh fruit, whipped cream etc. when on the plate:

Cheesy fruity 'cheesecake' (serves 6)

  • packet of sugar-free jelly crystals (or sugary ones if preferred!) - raspberry is v. nice in this
  • tub of philly or own-brand cream cheese
  • 10floz double cream (ie 1 small pot)

Make up the jelly to half a pint with boiling water, stir til dissolved and leave to cool.

While cooling, whip the double cream til standing in soft peaks.

Add the cream cheese and whip together til well mixed.

Add the cooled jelly and whip again til all mixed together (I do it in a pyrex bowl to check that it's all mixed in).

Pour into ramekins/containers/1 big dish and leave to set in fridge for 12 hours.

To serve poshly, turn out onto plates and decorate with berries/whipped cream or nuke a bag of froz raspbs in the microwave for a minute or so to make a fruit coulis - add sugar to taste. The dessert itself has got a very light texture, moussy and creamy.

The above is an Atkins recipe (and therefore v. suitable for coeliacs) so quite high in fats/proteins, but the portions are quite small so don't feel too guilty!

Sorry for the delay in replying to your suggestions - dh on comp all night for work (the cheek!)

I had originally intended to have couscous but had to drop that - but hadn't realised you could get barley couscous nighty night - thanks I might get that to make it a bit more authentic. Is it in mainstream supermarkets do you know or specialist healthfood shops?

Lovecat - the cheesy fruity cheesecake sounds lovely - and easy to tart up. I'll give it a test this week.

it is mainstream in n africa, probably specialist health food shops or a north african shop here. There is a good one in slough if you are near, called La Kasbah.
