Making a cake that looks like a pizza. Help!

DS1 is having a pizza making party and really wants a cake that looks like a pizza. I'm a competent baker, but generally tend to stick to simple buttercream and chocolate decorations rather than using fondant, etc.

I thought he wanted a similar cake to the one I made him last year until late last week, otherwise I would have contacted the cake maker I have used in the past for fantastic themed cakes but it is too late for that now. So I'm going to have a go at making it myself.

Has anyone ever made a cake like this and can share some tips or any experienced cake decorators willing to say how they would approach this cake?

Can you make it part of the party activities. you make a round cake and put a layer of dough coloured fondant on then give them some red icing and an load if sweets and tell them to decorate it

Make a single layer like a fatless sponge or thin layer of victoria sandwich/madeira cake. Then top with red buttericing , grated white chocolate etc you could probably cut out mushrooms, tomatoes etc in fondant icing and add texture with piped icing .

Or fill a sweet flan ready made case with red jelly, add some custard and/or cream and top with fruit or sprinkles

Make a large thin two layer cake
Jam and buttercream in the middle
Ice with a pizza dough colour
Use red food colour to paint on the tomato sauce
Green icing to make strips of peppers
Rolled up burgundy colour and cut slices of pepperoni
Little yellow bits for sweetcorn
Then mix white and yellow fondant and grate it for cheese
I usually colour the edge of the cake with brown food colour so it looks like the crust and gives it texture

Thanks all. Lots of the Pintrest ones seem to be American and use boxed yellow cake mix but the decorating ideas certainly help.

onemorecakeplease that was my general plan, but I did wonder if I was missing a trick. Plan is to hire 12" or 14" tin, ice using a ready coloured fondant and use more fondant or possibly sweets to make the toppings. I thought about maybe using a thin layer of strawberry jam as the sauce as DS tends to react to red food colouring.

LIZS the flan case sounds like a great back up plan in case I have a complete disaster.
