My son (22 months old) has always been a great eater - would eat all his meals and snacks with no fuss. A couple of weeks ago he had a sick bug for about a week and didnt eat much. Since then he has fully recovered but has become terrible at eating. He only wants to eats Frubes, and refuses breakfast, lunch and dinner. I tried to cut out all snacks so he was REALLY hungry at mealtimes. This is not working though. Any tips/ anyone had this before ? I have a new baby due in 2 months and want to get this sorted asap. Thanks in advance for any help.

It could be a mixture of the illness left his little tummy feeling delicate as a week of hardly eating would shrink your stomach a lot but also, perhaps he's getting more apprehensive about the pending birth and is worrying you/testing you. Just go with the flow and get to eat stuff he does like that's healthy, even if it's not what you'd normally give him. I'm sure it's more down to being ill though - my DC's take ages to recover eating-wise after sick bugs so I stick to cold teas with pieces of cheese, grapes, chicken, bread and butter, dry cereal etc.

Ds is a great eater but after being ill he always takes about 3-4 weeks before he starts eating properly again.

Hiya my DD went through exactly the same thing! My mum suggested this build up tonic stuff that you can get from the chemists. Its basically vitamins in a liquid form that you put into baby's milk or water. It did the trick for us! It started working after around 2-3 days. So I definitely reccomend it.

Hi again, have just raided the cupboard to see if we had any in so I could tell you what its called.

It's MINADEX - Orange flavour Tonic - Builds Children up fast. After illness, loss of appetite or when run down, it helps to restore vitality. Contains Vitamin A, D plus iron and is made by seven seas.

Hope that helps.

I posted a thread about this a few days ago. Basicly my dd had a horendous (sp) tummy bug/flu/conjunctivitis which lasted for a good 2 weeks. She didnt want to eat at all and would only drink milk and juice. She slowly began to eat a bit of toast and is now back to herself. I was advised by fellow mumsnetters that it can take a few weeks to gain appitite again after an illness, so dont worry. Also to be careful as they can get a temporary dairy intolerance after a bug, but yougurts and milk are generally ok, My dd didnt get this though. Also dont give big meals to start with, snacks, little and often. Cereal bars, crisps, fruit, buscuits stc. I did this and it worked. So try not to worry, all sounds normal x

Thanks for all the reassurance everyone. Guess it takes a while for them to get back to normal and it is his first tummy bug so I've no experience of them. I will definitely get the tonic as he still looks a bit pale so that sounds great. Interesting as well about the temporary allergy to dairy as I noticed after some cheese that he had a runny bum and then nappy rash. Today he ate his lunch with no problem so maybe we are turning the corner....
