Any ideas what i can substitute beef for in a stew i'm making (loads of root veg, butternut squash and red wine). I always make it with beef but am trying to cut down on red meat - any auggestions for which beans / pulses (are they the same thing?) i coudl use instead. Don't really want to use Tofu or Quorn.

lentils?

Chick peas or kidney beans are nice.

Any kind of bean would do, really.

agree with the chickpeas and kidney beans - yummy!!

I wouldn't use the pulses but would have lots of nice meaty mushrooms. Not much protein to speak of, but these days most people eat plenty of that anyway.

Chicken? Not a bean or pulse, I know, but not red meat either!
